Capcom still undecided about Monster Hunter 3 fees

We'll start with the good news about the upcoming Western release of Monster Hunter Tri: according to statements given to MTV Multiplayer by Capcom Community Specialist Shawn Baxter, the North American version of the game will use Capcom-hosted servers, like the Japanese version does, enabling players to connect and play online, free from friend codes. The other part isn't necessarily bad news, but it could be in the future: Capcom still hasn't decided whether to use the pay-for-play model found in all online Monster Hunter games in Japan, or whether to make online play free like it has for those same games in North America so far. It's likely that Capcom will do things the same way as before (which means free online), but with the company not saying anything, we can't be sure yet.

Muramasa publisher: UK retailers avoiding original IP

Rising Star Games, the European publishing partner of Marvelous Entertainment, is speaking out against UK retailers declining to stock Muramasa: The Demon Blade, which comes out November 13th in the region. COO Martin DeFries told MCV in an open letter, "Here in the UK, the game will not be available to buy in the majority of games retail outlets." He claims that the issue is not with the game itself, but retailers' over-reliance on safer, existing intellectual property. "If it is not first-party, a sequel or supported by a multi-million pound advertising spend, they are just not interested." Defries lamented that Muramasa could find its way into stores -- when it's traded in. Defries pondered in his letter whether the seemingly growing emphasis on franchises represents a "dumbing-down of the medium" that results in consumers having "little or no exposure to a rich and different gaming experience." Of course, retailers (and publishers) have preferred the sure thing for as long as there have been sequels, but actually not being able to market your game, especially one as interesting as Muramasa, seems especially frustrating.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Atomic turns to Wii FPS port, not giving up on Fallujah

You'd be forgiven for taking Atomic Games' announcement of a Wii FPS as the final nail in the coffin for semi-documentary game Six Days in Fallujah. Atomic says that, even though it's releasing a ported and renamed version of 2005's Close Combat: First to Fight for Wii (through publisher Destineer), it's not giving up on its original project, which was axed by Konami in April. The news that Marines: Modern Urban Combat -- huh, what do you mean that subtitle sounds familiar? -- will arrive November 10 comes after rumors that layoffs had all but shuttered the studio. Though Atomic's on to other projects, Gamasutra reports that the developer's president, Peter Tamte, still insists it "remains committed" to Fallujah. We're happy to see that Atomic's still plugging along, but if you're expecting to see Six Days in Fallujah anytime soon ... well, just don't.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Capcom shambles to the Toronto Zombie Walk

First: Toronto has an annual Zombie Walk? How cool is that? Anyhway, in order to promote Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, Capcom will have a presence at this year's brain-munching jamboree, which takes place on Saturday, October 24. The company will have a tent at the event, giving people free zombie makeovers. We presume Capcom will do this with makeup and not by doling out actual zombie bites. Capcom has also sponsored a series of rather disturbing ads for the event, one of which you will find after the break. Warning: It's gross.

USK predicts a Muscle March to Germany

Muscle March, Namco's barely-released arcade game turned WiiWare oddity, may actually leave Japan, according to a rating found on the German USK ratings board. We didn't think Bandai Namco would ever make this delightful mistake, but if it's being planned for release in Germany, it's bound for the rest of the world as well.To be sure, such an awful decision on Banamco's part will result in a similar awful decision on our part: you can't make a game as weird as this (it's about racing a line of bodybuilders through posing-man-shaped holes in walls) and not expect us to throw our money at it. Even if we know it's http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/05/muscle-march-wii-ware/">terrible.[Via GamerBytes]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Need for Speed: Nitro trailer heads down to Rio

We always thought Rio was only good as a backdrop for gritty crime dramas or a place to shop for gigantic Jesus statues. Alas, the tropical climate is also very suitable for street racing -- at least, according to this new trailer for EA's arcade racer, Need for Speed: Nitro. The racing looks intense enough and it seems EA did a good job getting the sense of speed aspect down. However, even though EA is willing to take a risk on the platform, we hope the company is prepared should Nitro suffer the same fate as our beloved Dead Space Girl.Permalink | Email this | Comments

NPD: Dead Space Extraction sold 9,000 copies in September

EA's latest experiment with mature Wii games doesn't seem to be going so well. According to numbers given to Edge by the NPD, Dead Space Extraction only managed to sell around 9,000 copies in September -- although it should be noted that the game was out for only five days in the NPD's September sales period (September 29 - October 3). EEDAR's Jesse Divnich, however, cites the sales as the result of a successful not telling anyone about the game experiment. "Electronic Arts didn't market Dead Space Extraction as much as it does with other titles," he told Edge. "And the success or failure of a Wii title usually correlates directly to marketing spend. If Electronic Arts spent little on marketing, I am sure the sell through was no surprise to them." It was, like everything, a complete shock to Dead Space Girl.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Altec Lansing feeds rock fantasies with mini monitor

Ever have a musician friend over to your house, only to find yourself ever-so-slightly embarrassed by the pile of fake instruments filling your den? Well, you should probably never let them catch you with the Altec Lansing Stage-Gig, a replica monitor meant to give guitar heroes the sense of a real rock show by blaring their audio straight up at them from the floor. It's kind of a cute idea, but we're not sure we're willing to pay $99 to have our 5.1 audio replaced by a single Altec Lansing speaker. Sure, you could buy two and have a really inconvenient stereo setup, but we think it's safe to chalk up another victory for imagination. [Via Engadget]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Game Crazy offers money clip for Darkside Chronicles pre-orders

With any other game, a novelty money clip, like the one Game Crazy is offering with Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles , would be quite an enticing bonus. But when pre-ordering across the street at GameStop will net you a T-shirt that turns you into a zombie, it takes a bit of the shine off the apple, doesn't it? Also, that Raccoon Police clip has the potential to start some uncomfortable conversations in the real world. Are you really ready for people to ask you if the Raccoon Police's jurisdiction extends beyond figuring out who tipped over neighborhood trash cans, or how you got your uniform over your bushy, striped tail? No, we didn't think so.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
