Ask Joystiq Nintendo: Demonstrative Edition

This week on Ask Joystiq Nintendo, we have just one question to answer as we prepare for E3. Next week, we'll be at E3, so we're taking a brief one-week hiatus from your questions. Hopefully E3 will answer every possible question you could come up with... right? Right? We didn't think the subject of this week's question was confusing until we started to answer it, and then it got kind of confusing. If you have a question for two weeks from now, send it into asknintendo AT joystiq DOT com. On to the question of the week!

Dhani Harrison: Beatles Rock Band will "blow people's minds"

Speaking to musicradar.com, Dhani Harrison, son of the Beatles' George Harrison, took care not to mince his words when discussing The Beatles: Rock Band. Naturally, one would expect that someone so closely connected to the project would be pretty positive about it, but Harrison made himself quite clear, saying, "I'm not hyping in the least when I say The Beatles: Rock Band is going to blow people's minds." He then added that the game will "set a new standard for video games."Strong words to be sure, but, considering Harmonix's pedigree, it just might be true. We'll find out when we take the game for a spin next week at E3.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Indiana Jones and the Stash of Gameplay Videos

Lucasarts' own Matt Shell is back at it again, bringing us three new videos looking at several different aspects of Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. The first video highlights the co-op gameplay (only available in the Wii version of the game), which will allow a friend to jump into the shoes of Indy's dad for some fatherly scolding, and to pummel a bad guy or two. Then, past the break, you'll fine two more videos that focus on Indy's whip, and how the player will be able to use it, as well as hotsets, which in Lucasarts language means interactive environments. Head past the break to check them out.

Bless yourself with a new Cursed Mountain trailer

If Cursed Mountain is trying to scare us, it's totally working. The latest trailer combines many of the things we fear most: older men holding newspapers; the snow-covered Himalayas; and odd boxes that may or may not hold some kind of deep, dark secret are just a few of the things we cower at on a regular basis. And that's only in the first 60 seconds of this two-minute look at the upcoming survival-horror Wii title! Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to go burn our copy of Cliffhanger. You know, just to be sure.[Via CVG]Permalink | Email this | Comments

LOTR: Aragorn's Quest on Wii, DS, PS2 and PSP

We just think it's adorable when publishers announce games that we've all known about for days already, like this release for Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest from Warner Bros. ... yes, the same one you read about last week. But it almost always pays to read these little missives. For example, in this one we learned that the "first Lord of the Rings videogame created specifically for kids and their families" will come to Wii, DS, PS2 and PSP.Warner also hints at the future of the franchise, saying upcoming offerings will appeal to families as well as "hard-core RPG fans." ... Could we maybe just skip straight to that one, please?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

See Gladiator A.D. in bloody action

We know that it's not fair to pass judgment on a game when its at an early stage of development, but we're having a problem with this first trailer for High Voltage's new Gladiator A.D. Namely: It doesn't look very good. It's not that it doesn't look fun, there's no way of knowing that, but it just looks really ... homely. We're going to cross out fingers and hope that this is just a super-early clip and the finished product is going to knock our sandals off in Q1 of 2010. Agreed?

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings releases June 9

Click for more screens, less sweaty backs
That's right, would-be archaeologists and Nazi taker-downers, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings is making its way to retail on June 9 for the DS, Wii, PSP and PS2. Sure, the prospect of playing as the good Dr. Jones is reason enough to keep your eye on this one, but we would like to point out that this game has magical powers. Seriously, it's able to rip through space and time like a hot knife through butter, pulling any being it wishes (like a smuggler who drops his cargo at the first sign of trouble) into the confines of its disc. We're surprised we haven't seen Dr. Richard Kimble in any of the screens for this one yet.

DS more popular than Paul Hogan in Australia

Okay, so DS hasn't really bested Paul Hogan's popularity -- as the man is an Australian legend -- but it is the fastest-selling piece of gaming hardware ever down under. Edge reports the DS, DS Lite and DSi have pulled together to sell two million units in a span of 221 weeks, the fastest any platform has managed to reach that coveted two-million milestone. Nintendo of Australia boasts that the DS has been the number one console in Australia for three years. That's just ... wow.Permalink | Email this | Comments

4mm unveils Def Jam Rapstar

Ask anyone who knows us: Joystiq understands hip-hop culture. So does the recently-revealed 4mm which today unveiled its maiden project: Def Jam Rapstar, a trailer for which we've nestled lovingly after the break. How do you know it's speaking to the hip-hop community so well with its new rapping game? Because CEO Nicholas Perrett manages to use the phrases "games that live long beyond the box," "MMO-esque," "long tail" and "game-like" in a single paragraph of the announcement story. Street? Street. As for actual gameplay, we know only that it will include rapping. We'll let you know more at E3.[Thanks, Storm Eagle]

Sonic and Sega all-stars race in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing

The last Sonic the Hedgehog racing game (not counting the flying snowboard business) was Sonic R on the Saturn, back in 1997. Sega has revived the idea of a Sonic racing game in the form of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, adding some friends from other Sega games, including Super Monkey Ball's AiAi the monkey and Samba de Amigo's Amigo the ... other monkey.Unlike Sonic R, this time Sonic and pals race in vehicles -- and unlike the Game Gear's Sonic Drift, those vehicles aren't just karts, but take various forms, from planes to sports cars to bananas. Sonic, however, does not have a Smart. Too bad!Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing will be out on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS in 2010. The announcement doesn't mention PC, but there's a "PC DVD" logo at the end.
