Let's Tap very carefully around these Silent Blocks

The latest weekly installment of Sega's Let's Tap trailer series, visible after the break, highlights the "Silent Blocks" mode, which basically forces us to unlearn one of the most basic tenets of Jenga: stop hitting the table, you jerk. Normally, jostling the play surface would bring about a quick and rage-filled end to any "stack of blocks" game, but in Let's Tap it's how you play.In the insane world of Let's Tap (a world where you play video games by not touching controllers), you'd be a jerk for refusing to tap on the table.

All three Metroid Prime games rolled up into Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii

If you were jealous of Japan's New Play Control releases of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, don't be. Nintendo of America just announced plans to release all three (non-pinball) Metroid Prime games on a single Wii disc as Metroid Prime Trilogy. The press release says that it was developed by "Retro Studios and Nintendo." Did Retro itself work on the refit before leaving Nintendo, or does the Retro credit apply only to the original games?Metroid Prime 1 and 2 will be enhanced with a widescreen mode and the pointer-based Wii controls from the Japanese re-releases. Metroid Prime 3 won't be, because it was already a Wii game and already has them. The collection will feature a "new unlockables system" that allows access to bonus artwork and other rewards based on accomplishments in all three games -- Corruption's "token" system applied to the whole series.Trilogy will be out in North America on August 24 for $50.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo convinces eBay and Amazon to ban DS flashcarts

Nintendo has announced that it has reached an agreement with Amazon and eBay through which the shopping sites will prohibit the sale of the R4 and other DS flashcarts. "Nintendo is pleased with the co-operation it has received from both eBay and Amazon to prevent the sales of game copying devices," Nintendo's global head of anti-piracy, Jodie Daughtery told MCV. eBay has actually pulled auctions for copying devices for years (presumably as an "item encouraging illegal activity), so if there is a policy update, it involves even more vigilant policing of auctions.Amazon UK games director Chris Poad told MCV that Amazon has a "notice and take down" process for its third-party Marketplace. "So where a third party believes that their IP has been infringed, they can highlight it and we can take it down. This is what happened in the case of the R4."Now Nintendo just has the rest of the Internet to deal with in its efforts to curtail DS piracy (and, as an extremely unfortunate side effect, homebrew).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle at 'very end' of production, won't be playable at E3

Well, today officially sucks, because the game we anticipate the most -- Suda51's No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle -- won't be available to play at next month's E3, Goichi Suda told 1UP. We'd cancel our trip, but we already bought the frakking plane tickets! It's not all bad news, however, as Suda51 does hint at the game being at the show, just not in playable form. He also says that the game is "at the very end of production," providing hope that it will meet its scheduled US release of January 2010 on the Wii.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GameStop CEO reckons there 'will have to be price cuts' for Wii, PS3

Sitting atop his throne made with the profits from used games, GameStop CEO Daniel DeMatteo said in an investor call that he believes a price drop for the Wii and PS3 is due. Edge reports (echoing Seeking Alpha's transcript) that DeMatteo thinks, given the current economy, that console prices are too high. He believes that by the third quarter there need to be "price cuts in order to get the hardware moving" to where the company's projections expect them to be.Dematteo had previously mentioned in a CNBC interview that he'd like to see a $100 cut for the PS3, the same figure that Lazard Capital's Colin Sebastian is expecting by fall. As for a Wii cut, Nintendo doesn't really need one, even as it cut manufacturing costs by 45 percent. If Nintendo does cut the price of the Wii, it would almost feel like charity.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SpongeBob's Truth or Square aimed squarely at you this fall

SpongeBob SquarePants is ten years old this year, which means that if you were in, say, college when you first learned of the cartoon, you are old now. To mark this milestone (SpongeBob's, not the discovery of your advanced age), THQ plans to release a new SpongeBob platformer called SpongeBob's Truth or Square this October, for the Wii, DS, PSP, and Xbox 360.The Heavy Iron-developed game, based on the "SpongeBob's 10 Happiest Moments" DVD, features two unique new gameplay systems: first, SpongeBob can now change his shape, which means that players will have the power of a sledgehammer-shaped sponge or spatula at their disposal. In addition, a second player will be able to control Plankton and "help SpongeBob solve puzzles, unlock new pathways and defeat super-powered creatures."The Super Mario Galaxy-style co-op seems like an excellent fit for a children's game (so that parents can help out or play along at any moment), but our favorite thing about this game, by far, is that it gives us an excuse to embed this Burger King commercial after the break.

Spielberg presents: Spielberg in: Boom Blox Bash Party trailer

In the latest trailer for Boom Blox: Bash Party, the man with a plan, Steven Spielberg, gets intimate and offers details on EA's sequel to its beloved Wii puzzler. Marketing jargon is thrown around quite freely, with Spielberg admitting that Bash Party "takes Boom Blox to a new level" and that "all of the good ideas" were saved for the sequel. Yeah, right.Thankfully, the video doesn't stray into that territory for long, as we eventually get a close look at what we all want to see: multiplayer! If that doesn't look like fun, then we must be dead.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sega's #FreeStuffFriday includes lip balm! (And boring video game stuff)

Sega is at it again, giving away lots of free swag for its #FreeStuffFriday via Twitter. Sega will, in turn, follow you. This Friday (that's tomorrow) at around 2:00 pm UK time, @SEGA will post a swag pack and a code phrase. The first person to send the code phrase to @SEGA via direct message wins the swag.Good luck nabbing that lip balm, though. That sucker is ours.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

790K people bought Chrono Trigger DS (and other Square sales figures)

Note: numbers reflect 10k increments
Square Enix has released an accounting of its software sales for fiscal year 2009 -- which ended March 31 -- and remakes ruled. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, a refresh of the 1992 Super Famicom installment in the famous role-playing series, sold 1.35 million copies globally -- placing Dissidia: Final Fantasy, a new property, in second place with combined sales of 930,000 teeny-tiny UMDs.Let there be no questioning of Chrono Trigger's lasting appeal: the DS re-release managed to make it into the hands on 790k gamers, many of which were no doubt buying the game for the second or third time since the 16-bit original's 1995 launch.European gamers gobbled up Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII with half a million units sold in the territory, although the region came in third in overall sales for Square Enix. The US actually proved to be its most lucrative market with 1.69 million games sold, versus 1.51M for Japan. Part of the success in the West: The Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery, which sold better in the States than anywhere else.[Via Siliconera]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dragonball: Tenkaichi Daibouken revealed ... and it's a side-scroller

The Wii is seeing a revival of the classic side-scroller -- with 3D trimmings. Siliconera has shed more light on Bandai's latest Dragonball -- Tenkaichi Daibouken -- which follows in the leaping, bounding footsteps of "2.5D" titles such as Klonoa and New Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. The game is (to no one's surprise, we'd imagine) cel-shaded -- and looking quite sharp, as the above screenshot implies. It stars young Goku and is based on the earliest pre-"Z" Dragonball material. You can catch a glimpse of gameplay on the game's Flash-based Japanese site (if you don't mind giant kanji characters obscuring some of it). Neither Namco Bandai nor Atari has laid claim to a US release, but that may very well change come E3.[Via Siliconera]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
