X-Men Origins: Wolverine dev diary promises game 'does not suck'

The first installment in a series of developer diary videos for X-Men Origins: Wolverine dropped today, bringing with it a number of heady promises from the folks behind the sextuple-clawed slaughterfest. Included in these promises are reminders of the title's feral protagonist's badassedness (the frequent use of this adjective might make the video NSFW, if you work at like, a monastery or something), and a solemn vow that Wolverine will be "the movie game that finally does not suck." The dev team behind Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game begs to differ. If developer boasting isn't your cup of tea, the video also provides some nice gameplay footage from the title. However, this footage could leave you worried about Logan's mental health -- we're fairly sure wielding knuckle cutlery whilst traversing a rope bridge isn't the safest way to get around.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ask Joystiq Nintendo: All DS Edition

In this week's Ask Joystiq Nintendo, in anticipation of the North American DSi launch (and also because we got a bunch of DS questions) we address some of the most worrisome issues related to the DS! Most notably the nagging issue of the DSi's regional limitations, but we also discuss flashcart compatibility and the ever-present threat of fake cartridges from eBay. Do you have a question about the Wii, DS, or anything else related to Nintendo? Send us an email at asknintendo AT joystiq DOT com!

Atlus's latest delay-plus-bribe combo: Steal Princess

In order to prevent its localization of Climax's Steal Princess from being ignored at retail, Atlus has decided to delay the ARPG from April 21 to May 19, after already delaying it from its original March date. This gives DS owners more chance to hear about the game prior to its release, and blogs like this another opportunity to report about the game, like we're doing right now. Yes, we played right into Atlus's hands. But if the company's going to hold Steal Princess hostage until we post about it, what choice do we have? We'd like to play it this year!Along with the announcement, as is Atlus's custom, the company revealed a bonus included with every copy. The reverse of the box cover will feature the above artwork, selected by fan votes, as a mini-poster. We're on the fence about removing part of the game's box to decorate a tiny patch of wall space, but we like options (and we like Steal Princess artwork!)Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq Preview: Nintendo DSi hands-on video

Today, a Nintendo DSi showed up on our doorstep. (Thanks, Mr. Stork!) After lovingly cradling the package for a moment, we got down to business with unboxing the little guy, introducing it to its jealous big brother, and, of course, poking around inside its newborn applications. But we don't want to grow too attached -- we'll be giving this DSi a new home through a Joyswag giveaway in the (very) near future (now, where did we put that fingerprints cloth ... ). Stay tuned! In the meantime, please, get acquainted:

The DS Ghostbusters game is Ecto-cooler

We know very little about Red Fly Studio's DS Ghostbusters game. It'll have more of a business-management component, much like the classic David Crane Ghostbusters, and it'll use an exaggerated graphical style like the Wii game, but we haven't heard much about the experience of playing the game. We now know from a Co-Optimus interview that it'll be awesome in a way no other version of the new Ghostbusters game is."Driving the Ecto-1 is an exclusive feature for the Nintendo DS version of the game," Red Fly's Dustin Dobson said, "although it will certainly play a big part in all of the games." Sadly for the Wii version, there are no plans as yet for a proton pack attachment, as far as Dobson knows. "But whether or not an official pack accessory is made, I am sure custom ones built by fans of the movies and games are going to pop up! I am excited to see what people come up with." Somebody buy one of the movie props and mod it. You guys have money. You can do this.

Ubisoft spawning 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' tie-in games

We'll be straight with you: We got the press release from Ubisoft for the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs tie-in games yesterday ... on April Fool's Day. Being the anti-societal recluses we are, we were completely unaware of the upcoming movie by the same name and therefore considered the release to be a feeble attempt at ballyhoo. And apparently there's a children's book as well? Where was our childhood?!Information about the forthcoming games is scant, though we know it's coming to Xbox 360/PlayStation 3/Wii/DS/PSP/PC (no PlayStation 2 version?) and will arrive in tandem with the movie's release on September 18th. According to the game's website, it's set to feature 20 levels of town saving, employing "outrageously fun and wacky gadgets." If Surf's Up is any indication of Cloudy's quality, maybe we'll end up enjoying this one more than most movie licensed-based games.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Archer Maclean's new Wii racer is crazy for controllers

Awesome Play, the new studio from classic game icon and Mercury creator Archer Maclean, has just announced its first project: a futuristic Wii racing game called Speed Zone, scheduled for a "late May" release in North America. The boost-heavy racing game features solo tracks, multi-car races, and a battle mode in which "players can fry opponents with a lighting gun or shatter them with an overactive chain-gun complete with flying shells - not to mention a plethora of other weapons, including rockets, missiles, lasers, and mines." The really interesting thing about Speed Zone, however, is that Awesome Play has used the Wii's control options to work a little magic. Not only can the game support the Wiimote, Nunchuk, Classic Controller, and GameCube controller, it allows use of up to four of Logitech's Speed Force Wireless Wheels. And through the use of four Wiimotes and any four other connected controllers, it is possible for eight players to play simultaneously. In split-screen.The only clue to Speed Zone's appearance is a Flash banner at the top of Awesome Play's site, of which we've taken a screenshot.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Taito's Wii LostMagic followup arrives in Japan May 21

We last heard about Takt of Magic (and first heard about Takt of Magic) when Nintendo slipped the game into its Japanese media conference lineup video. The latest Shonen Jump, as reproduced by Siliconera, finally brings another mention of the Taito-developed action RPG, revealing a Japanese release date of May 21, along with a few screens and a bit of character art. The exact relationship between this game and the DS's LostMagic is unclear -- it could be a sequel or a "spiritual sequel." The new game, which stars new characters Charlotte and Orville, uses a gimmick similar to LostMagic's touchscreen spell input: spells are done by drawing runes onscreen with the Wiimote pointer. We'll have to wait until Nintendo says anything at all about this game to find out more.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DSi Shop's American lineup is ... diverse

So, Nintendo has announced all the games you'll be able to purchase for your brand new DSi in the online DSi Shop on April 5. The list is ... well, we were going to say "eclectic", but it's just plain weird. You can Nintendo's full descriptions after the break, but here are the titles:

  • WarioWare: Snapped!
  • Bird & Beans
  • Brain Age Express: Math
  • Master of Illusion Express: Funny Face
  • Art Style: AQUIA

You can level a lot of complaints at Nintendo and be well within reason, but you can't say that it's not trying some different stuff. As previously announced, you'll also get $10 in credit (1,000 DSi Points) if you log on to the store by October 5, which leads us to ask: Which game will you be picking up?
