PSA: Guitar Hero: Metallica melting faces, store shelves today [update]

We thought we'd pass along a courteous reminder from Activision informing the gaming community that Guitar Hero: Metallica began rocking store shelves today. If you haven't found current full-band simulators to be punishing enough, Metallica promises to deliver with an "Expert +" mode, double kick pedals, and guitar solos capable of turning even the sturdiest fingers into tiny puddles of red goo. If you've got $59.99 lying around (or $49.99 for the Wii version, $39.99 for the PS2), you can simulate "riding the lightning"* with unparalleled accuracy.*Warning: Riding lightning can lead to unintended health consequences in the groin region, including serious unsightly burns and impotence. Consult your doctor before deciding to mount any arcs of electricity.Update: The PS2 version isn't actually dropping until Sunday, May 24 -- meaning Activision is effectively tainting two of 2009's Sabbath days with a touch of unholy metal.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GDC09: Joystiq interviews Nintendo's Denise Kaigler about Nintendo and 'the core,' DS coexistence

We first met Nintendo of America's VP of Corporate Affairs Denise Kaigler at a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament in Worcester, Massachusetts, shortly after she accepted the job with the company. At the time, she had just left Reebok and was a little defensive (probably because she didn't really know all the details yet) of her role at the house of Mario. Our initial impression of Kaigler was that she was a little different, there was something we couldn't quite pin down at the time. Here we are now, a year later, and she certainly is comfortable in her role. Sitting in a big comfy armchair -- barefoot, mind you -- in a San Francisco hotel during GDC, we spoke with the executive about Nintendo's relationship with the core audience, its plans with the two DS models and its relationship with third-party publishers. Reading our transcription of this interview, it can be interpreted that there was some hostility in our conversation; however, it's worth noting, that in context, it was a mixture of sass and smiles. She certainly is a different type of executive than the other public figures we've gotten used to in this industry. So, is the SD storage solution a sign that Nintendo is paying attention to the core gamers? Was that development part of feedback? How did that happen?Kaigler: We have never stopped listening and caring about the core gamer. Ever. As you know, a year ago when I got to the job and reading your site, reading some of the other sites, and reading most of all the message boards -- what folks are saying about it. And they are saying, you know, Nintendo doesn't care. It's never been about that, right. So what I think - I am going to answer your question in a second - but how I like to explain it: So, there is the core, who have been so faithful to Nintendo for so many years and we absolutely appreciate it and recognize that. ... You guys are still right there dead center, we've just brought in more gamers. We've shared the fun that you guys (the core) have had to yourselves and enjoyed for so long. We are sharing it with many, many more people. So our focus has never gone off the core, we have expanded our focus to include others. So I want to first say that.

Nintendo planning huge DSi marketing campaign, giving away 1,000 DSi Points

Rather than hoping that the merits of its soon-to-be-released handheld will sell themselves (a strategy commonly referred to as the "Game Boy Micro Maneuver"), Nintendo is apparently plotting a huge North American marketing campaign for the DSi. The company has already developed a schedule of television, online and in-store advertisements for the shutterbugged device from now until Christmas, making it Nintendo's biggest ad campaign of the year.Step one in this campaign is already in action to ensure early adoption of the revamped handheld -- anyone who purchases a DSi and signs on to the Nintendo DSi Shop by October 5 will receive 1,000 free DSi Points. It's a succesful promotion that also accompanied the system's Japanese launch -- not that Japanese game consumers needed additional incentive to purchase yet another DS.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Target: Buy 2 Wii games, get 1 free

Beginning this Sunday, Target is having a great promotion on Nintendo Wii titles. Customers who buy two Wii titles (priced at $49.99 or more) can pick up a third title (priced at equal or lesser value, at a max of $49.99) for free. The catch? The offer is only available in stores! That means you online shoppers must first acquire pants, get into your car, drive to the store ... man, this sounds like a lot of work! But with over 80 games available in the offer, it might be worth the effort. Also, if you plan on picking up Animal Crossing ... be prepared to answer a few questions.(Click image to view the full ad)Permalink | Email this | Comments

GDC09: 'Rock Band' was almost 'Metal Lords'

This comes as something of a shock to us, but Harmonix actually considered names for Rock Band other than the perfect, obvious Rock Band. Senior designer Dan Teasdale unveiled a series of rejected alternate titles for the music game at a GDC session. The titles included winners like the aforementioned Metal Lords and Power Chords, and some that probably would have affected sales in the negative: Big Band Blowout, I Want To Be A Rockstar! One that, according to Teasdale, was rejected as something that would "never sell": Rock Band: World Tour. Actually, that one deserves its own line.Rock Band: World Tour.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Touch Ruminations: DSi Shop (and how it could be more important than WiiWare)

In Touch Ruminations, former DS and Wii Fanboy Lead David Hinkle talks about whatever he feels like. He's a jerk like that. This week, he talks about the Nintendo DSi and its compares its DSi Shop to WiiWare. The opinions expressed here belong to the author and don't necessarily reflect those of Joystiq, Weblogs Inc. or its affiliates.Have you had ample time to recover from Iwata's keynote? I have, and thinking about the DSi (I can't help it, I wants it), I believe that the DSi Shop is easily the most exciting and important feature of the new handheld. And I think it's a service that could be more important than WiiWare.

Big Three lock down E3 media briefing dates and times

Dates have been set. Lines have been drawn. The war rages on. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have all scheduled media briefing dates and times for E3 2009. As usual, Microsoft jumps in first, kicking the affair off on June 1 (the day before E3) at 10:30AM PDT. On June 2, Nintendo waggles to stage at 9:00AM PDT, followed by Sony at 11:00AM PDT. With E3 reverting to the days of yore, we expect blinding lasers and fist-pumping anthems along with all the megaton announcements. Think of an excuse now, because between June 1 and June 4 you're not going to want to be at work, school or with significant others. You're going to be at your computer, frantically hitting refresh for all of our in-depth coverage. You know, like you are right now.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years screenshot comparison

What changes can gamers expect when the once mobile-exclusive Final Fantasy IV: The After Years comes to WiiWare? Siliconera decided to compare screens from the episodic mobile version of the game and new grabs from the upcoming WiiWare version to find out. Apart from showing off more real estate on screen -- taking advantage of widescreen -- slight tweaks have been made to the game's menus. The WiiWare's version of the battle menu now displays maximum character health as well as the ATB bar (pictured above). As for the graphics, the game will reuse the sprites found in the mobile game, which Siliconera notes are actually borrowed from the original Final Fantasy IV adventure of the '90s. It's like a one-two punch of nostalgia and connecting your cell phone to a widescreen TV.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Majora's Mask, Phantasy Star on Japanese Virtual Console in April

Wow! This has been a really great week to be a Nintendo fan. It's been a really great week to be a Virtual Console fan in particular -- when was the last time we could say something like that? The week has just gotten a lot better with the release of the list of upcoming Virtual Console releases for Japan. Why? Two reasons. First: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Like Ocarina of Time, it costs a painful 1,200 Wii Points -- and like Ocarina of Time, it will probably drop to the usual 1,000 in North America. Second, and possibly even more exciting: Phantasy Star! The Sega Master System RPG masterpiece is also coming to the Virtual Console. Maybe it's not a big deal to those of you with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, but personally, it's awesome news.We fully expect to see both of these games in North America soon. Neither SMS games nor N64 games seem to take long to make it overseas. Also of interest: Hudson's PC Engine port of the NES Ninja Gaiden. And the arcade version of Space Invaders, which marks the third time the "original" Space Invaders has been released on VC. The full list is after the break.
