Dementium: The Ward releasing in April ... in poor, forgotten Europe

At last, forgotten souls in Europe will be able to wander Dementium: The Ward's grainy, dimly lit halls. After scaring up modest reviews in the US and sending Japanese hospitals screaming, Southpeak announced that it will publish Renegade Kid's spook-tastic freshman effort in Europe on April 17.The Nintendo DS survival horror title was first released in the US in 2007, and casts players in the role of an amnesiac stuck in a grimy hospital full of puzzles and the occasional not-so-friendly monster. Finally, survival horror fans in Europe will have something to keep them busy on the commuter train besides the latest Jamie Oliver, though honestly both are probably just as frightening.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GDC09: Spring release for MotionPlus still possible

With all of the amazing stuff that Nintendo did show at GDC, we briefly forgot about what it didn't show: Wii Sports Resort and the MotionPlus device, both of which we'd expect to hear something about if they were still planned for "spring." MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo asked Reggie Fils-Aime about the missing game and peripheral, and Reggie suggested they could still make a spring release. "We haven't announced the full spring line-up ... And it feels like winter in Seattle right now."Reggie also mentioned that Wii Sports Resort's controls had been improved beyond the previous demo. "The level of full motion capability is far in excess of what we showed at E3."

Joystiq Review: Pokemon Platinum

The structure of releases in the Pokémon series has always stood defiantly in the face of reason. Installments in the series aren't games, they're "Generations," each of which include two simultaneously released, nearly identical titles, and a third nearly identical title which launches a couple of years after the first two. On top of all of this, the gameplay, story and core mechanics of the game remain extremely similar throughout these "Generations." As a cynic would likely remark, Nintendo has released the same game about 14 times now.Pokémon Platinum is the companion piece to 2007's Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Following in the vein of other third wheels in former generations (such as Pokémon Yellow or Crystal), it leans heavily upon the framework of its predecessors, marginally improving the game's overall aesthetic and adding a handful of new features. But are these minor tweaks enough to justify purchasing an updated RPG that many of you likely purchased two years ago?

Sega wants you to want The Conduit

Sega just sent out an announcement that should give classic rock fans a jolt of excitement. The publisher announced that High Voltage's The Conduit will feature new guitar music composed by Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen. This is presumably in addition to the score from composer Diego Stocco. "We were very excited to get the chance to work with Rick on The Conduit," said High Voltage's Eric Nofsinger. "Even though he's known for driving rock guitar, he was able to provide great ambience and textural qualities that perfectly fits the mood of the game and helps it become a truly unique experience." For his part, Nielsen said simply, "I hope these lunar notes float with you." We hope that High Voltage takes a "lunar note" from Nielsen and puts five-necked guitars in the game as weapons.Permalink | Email this | Comments

GDC09: Waggle finally arrives on DS

If you thought PDP's motion-based GameTrak Freedom controller for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 was a great idea, prepare to be blown away. At GDC, the company is also showing off a motion controller for ... the Nintendo DS. This huge stick is the SmartStylus, a device that provides various advanced features for the DS, including rumble, uh, blinking lights, and, in one configuration, motion control. The SmartStylus 1, expected to launch this fall pending Nintendo approval, is basically a Squiggle Wiggle Writer connected via (we believe) a GBA cartridge, acting as a rumble pack. The SmartStylus 2 "can include a variety of added features, including LEDs, sound and motion feedback." Wow, all that in just one hilariously oversized device! After the break we've got a shot, taken by Kevin Kelly, of the SmartStylus display on the show floor.

NPD: Rock Band surpassed $1b in retail sales in North America

Holy crap, you guys really like your Rock Band. A press release, citing NPD figures, has confirmed the franchise has generated $1 billion dollars in retail sales in North America alone since its November 20, 2007 release. If you thought that was crazy (it really isn't, considering Guitar Hero already surpassed the $1 billion mark), know that wannabe rockers have downloaded over 40 million premium songs from the Rock Band store. We can't say we blame you, as there are some pretty great songs to choose from.Sadly, the press release doesn't tell us what songs were most popular, nor does it tell us what platforms people were downloading the most songs on, but we have a feeling we know what will be the most downloaded song. You heard it here first, folks!Permalink | Email this | Comments

Namco Bandai loves the Virtual Console Arcade

The bad news about Japan's Virtual Console Arcade: it's expensive! With the exception of Star Force, which costs 500 Points there like it does in the US, everything is priced at 800 Points. The good news: it's well-supported! There are already six games available on the service (Return of Ishtar, Emeraldia, Gaplus, Star Force, Space Harrier, and Solvalou), and there are tons more coming.Namco Bandai, who is already dominating the service, has 26 more games planned for 2009. From big franchise games like Galaga '88 and Pac-Mania to obscurities like Knuckle Heads and Numan Athletics. Superior arcade versions of games like Splatterhouse are even on the way! The full list is after the break. At least we know now that the Virtual Console Arcade can support more than 8-bit games.[Via Siliconera]

Okay, let's take stock. We got a new Zelda, the Wii "Storage Solution" (which is actually better than Nintendo originally made it out to be), and arcade games and Final Fantasies on Virtual Console. How could this GDC get any better for Nintendo fans? How about Professor Layton 2?At Level-5's panel, director Akihiro Hino showed a list of current projects, including Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, an English translation of the name of the second Layton game. Later, during the Q&A, someone asked Hino if the sequel was being localized for North America and Europe. Hino responded that he wants to release all six Laytons (including the new trilogy), and that Diabolical Box is indeed in the midst of localization -- he hopes to have it out in six months.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
