I should explain before you click the article. The article is long, but basically it outlines that the PS3 has fallen into a solid last place in the next gen console wars with Wii taking a solid first and Xbox360 having second sealed. The article is slightly outdated as far as I can tell, but the PS3 costs too much to sell to most where they can easily purchase a more affordable system (a.k.a. Wii or 360). That being said, PS2 seems to be selling much better than PS3 as of February 08, which stands to show that most PS2 buyers will most likely not buy a PS3 because the PS2 is cheaply priced system with a decent set of games. Therefore when someone buys a PS2, they are looking for the more affordable system.
When these consumers want to upgrade to the current gen, they are more likely aiming at something affordable because the PS2 was reasonably priced, so they buy a Wii (cheapest and most "fun") or a 360 (reasonably priced, excellent set of games) with the PS3 being overpriced with a similar gaming set as the Xbox360.
Because of the fact that most games made for 360 are also made for PS3, the gaming experience is the same, consumers are most likely to buy a 360 because of it's price range. PS3 can't really compete with the price because the system took so much R&D that the break even point would be lengthened if they ever did price drop.
So in conclusion, Sony lacks the ability to compete with the gaming portion of the electronics world.
