VC in Brief: Space Harrier (Arcade)

Space Harrier (Arcade, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)We say: Way superior to the Sega Genesis port; fun on-rails shmupVirtual Console-savvy readers likely remember this video for Space Harrier. Well, that's the bunk Sega Master System version (fun as it may be), and this week, the real deal arcade version arrives. It's superior in just about every way to the Sega Master System version already on the service (including price, sadly). So, if you're going to drop that $8 you earned from mowing lawns and shaving pets on Space Harrier, make sure it's the superior arcade version here.
Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo wins yet another patent infringement case

Nintendo seems to be on a streak as of late, laying down a good old Mario stomp over any patent infringement case thrown its way. Back in March, Nintendo won a case filed in Texas by Fenner Investments Ltd, and now Nintendo has won another one filed by Guardian Media Technologies, Ltd. On June 8th, only six months after the lawsuit was filed in California, Judge Manuel Real ruled in favor of Nintendo and dismissed the case.Nintendo's VP of legal and general counsel, Rick Flamm, is jovial over the court's decision. He said that the case was dismissed because Nintendo convinced the court that "Guardian's patent had nothing to do with Nintendo's products." Mr. Flamm must be keeping one of those glittery stars in his pocket, because it looks like Nintendo's legal game is invincible.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Celebrate a legendary Scribblenauts moment with this wallpaper

The two aspects of Scribblenauts that get the most attention are its absolutely irresistible concept, and the robust lexicon that backs it up. But one underappreciated aspect of the game is the art. Not only is there artwork for those myriad items in the database, 5th Cell's Edison Yan has developed an eye-catching style for the game that highlights, rather than hiding, the jointed nature of the sprites. On top of that, he's given the main character a rather quirky, memorable look.Yan created this image in celebration of the vaunted "Post 217" of a NeoGAF Scribblenauts thread, in which poster "Feep" regales the forum with a tale of bringing a dinosaur through a time machine to fight robot zombies. As a result of this searingly awesome chain of events, "Post 217" has become a sort of shorthand for the infinite possibilities in Scribblenauts. As a gift to the NeoGAF community, Creative Director Jeremiah Slaczka had Yan whip this up. It's now available on IGN in wallpaper form, and we predict that it'll be on your desktop in about ten seconds.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Week on the Nintendo Channel: Summer of DS

Nintendo is planning a full-on assault of DS advertising this summer, evidence by this week's Nintendo Channel updates. In following around one family, the TV spots will show they they keep them from taking a detour into Boredsville during their vacation through use of the DS and DSi. Of course, as with just about any Nintendo DS advertising campaign, all we see them playing is some Brain Age and Mario Kart. But, hey, it's worth watching alone for the hilarious put-downs of one Garret Morris, trust us.For the rest of this week's updates, head past the break.

Sega: game not over for Aliens: Colonial Marines, Aliens RPG

The big, green gooey eggs containing Sega's long in development Aliens: Colonial Marines and Aliens RPG are going to hatch -- just not soon. When we asked why the games were absent from this year's E3, Sega replied, "Aliens vs. Predator will be the first to ship out of our triplet of Aliens titles; hence it was shown at this year's E3. We'll have more news to share about the other two games in the near future so stay tuned." Rumors of both titles being jettisoned out an airlock have been swirling since earlier this year.In addition, Gearbox Software prez Randy Pitchford has confirmed to Kotaku that Colonial Marines lives on in now-gen console and handheld form on DS. Pitchford told the site that Gearbox is not developing the portable title, lending more credence to purported footage of a WayForward-developed Colonial Marines that leapt out of the darkness last month. We've put word into Obsidian, developers of Aliens RPG, for confirmation of that title's status.Permalink | Email this | Comments

McDonalds/Nintendo partnership goes nationwide in Japan with new services

Last year, Nintendo and McDonald's introduced the "Nintendo Spot" service, through which special downloadable content and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection access was made available at a few Tokyo-area McDonalds locations. This week, Nintendo and McDonalds announced that they will offer the service nationwide, with new exclusive content. Train stations on Tokyo's Tsukuba Express line will also have the service, with different exclusive content. The Mac de DS service allows users to access DSiWare, to play online using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and to download special demos and other content. Current material includes a Pokemon stamp rally in which you unlock coupons for McDonalds products by visiting stores and "collecting" Pokemon. There are also quiz games and downloadable comics. We'd say this kind of commercial cross-promotion is despicable, but, really, this has to be designed more with Nintendo's context-sensitive DS download initiative than with marketing -- because neither Mickey D's nor Nintendo really needs to do anything to become more popular. New Tingle website springs up, is weird

Hot on the heels of a new ad spotted in Famitsu, a new Tingle website has appeared at Nintendo Japan. The website actually features the fairy-obsessed man-in-green very little, but it still contains plenty of his ... eccentric charm. Our Japanese is rusty (nonexistent, really), but it looks like you can sign up for something. Also, clicking on the television reveals a static filled screen with the date June 18, so we expect something should pop up by then.In the meantime, clicking the bell in the center of the screen allows you to have your fortune read by the freaky soothsayer seen above. What does it all mean? All signs point to a new Tingle game be revealed soon.

Rock Band: Country Track Pack debuts 13 new songs for franchise

The Rock Band track packs have been rather unexciting for the many of us that have internet access (read: you). The previous packs compiled already-available DLC onto a single disc at a slightly discounted price making it attractive exclusively to those that -- for one reason or another -- can't buy songs from the in-game music store.Looks like things will change for the upcoming country music Track Pack. Available July 21st on every platform, the Track Pack will offer exclusive songs that are new for the Rock Band franchise. In fact, 13 songs will be brand new, making the Track Pack a much more exciting purchase for country music-lovin' Rock Band aficionados. The $29.99 disc will feature 21 songs from the Dixie Chicks, Keith Urban, Kenny Rogers, Shania Twain, Willie Nelson and more. You can read the entire track listing after the break.

Exclusive blue Wiimote, Nunchuk and MotionPlus for lucky Wii Sports Resort visitors

It seems that the door is beginning to creak open for alternate-color Wii systems and accessories. First, Nintendo finally announces a Wii in a new color scheme (black), and now, less than two weeks later, the company has announced another color for the Wiimote and Nunchuk -- and the first new color for the MotionPlus. However, this is going to be a little harder to come by.From June 25 to August 31, Nintendo will give away exclusive light blue Wiimotes, MotionPlus attachments and Nunchuks (and a matching jacket, of course) to five thousand Japanese Club Nintendo members who register copies of Wii Sports Resort. Not that Nintendo needed to offer any kind of incentive to sell Wii Sports Resort.[Via GoNintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
