Telltale's Dave Grossman promises Tales of Monkey Island will be more 'epic'

A brand new episodic Monkey Island adventure is heading to PC and WiiWare this summer. While some are weary of the game's new 3D look, series co-creator Dave Grossman reassures players that the upcoming adventure is a true sequel. "The series takes place a couple of years after the end of the last game. The characters are a little bit older, but haven't really learned anything," he says in this exclusive video. The episodic format is giving Telltale an opportunity to create a grander adventure for the upcoming game. "It's going to come out one chapter at a time over the period of five months, and the story's going to be told that way. So, it's more of an epic saga," Grossman says. The first episode of Tales of Monkey Island will be available on PC in July, with the Wii release to follow shortly thereafter. To check out this video on your Wii, check out the Nintendo Update channel next Monday.

Lost Winds dev: Reviewers are a problem with low Wii metacritic scores

Apparently, for the Nintendo Wii (according to Lost Winds developer David Braben), the folks reviewing Wii games are the wrong people for the job. Responding to comments made by EA Sports' Peter Moore earlier this month regarding low metacritic scores for Wii games and its less than serious effect on sales numbers of said games, Frontier Developments head David Braben told Eurogamer that, "Most reviewers are what are often called 'core gamers' - and these family-focused games tend to appeal less to them." And he makes a good point. If Joystiq's readership is primarily "core gamers," what's the point in covering casual fare meant for more mainstream crowds? Braben continues, "It throws up a difficult dilemma for those reviewers ... are they reviewing the game for those people likely to play it, or for those people who form the bulk of their readership?" We put it to you, Joystiq loyalists: Continue to cover games intended for a "casual," more mainstream audience (as well as more "hardcore" titles), or focus on "core" games coverage exclusively?

Newegg takes a bite out of The Munchables' price

Newegg is currently offering copies of Namco Bandai's food-themed adventure The Munchables for just $16.99, with free shipping. This seems like a rather sudden and drastic price drop, the kind that might be a mistake, so don't tarry if you're thinking of picking it up.The Munchables has actually been getting reasonably good (if not glowing) reviews, so at this low price, it might be worth a look. That is, of course, only if you have a high tolerance for weirdness. This is a game in which all the enemies are vegetables, after all, and you fight by eating them. Don't pick this up if the majority of your games are about World War II or something.[Via GoNintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Introducing Monster Hunter 3's 'Chacha'

All right, Monster Hunter 3. You got us. We are officially enchanted. This Claymation-style trailer, introducing the new "Chacha" creature, is one of the cutest things we've seen in some time, and definitely the cutest thing we've seen in a long time about hunting and killing large animals.Apparently, just like in the video, the Chacha will follow you underwater, and has a special "dance" attack. In the video, the "dance" appeared to summon a large monster, but we aren't sure if that's what it really does in-game.As much as we enjoy looking at this Monster Hunter stuff, we must still note that the game hasn't been officially dated for North America yet. Please, Capcom? And if it wouldn't be too much trouble, we'd like it in bundle form as well. Thanks!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Infinite Space takes space at top of Japanese charts

Platinum Games' first release may not have been a sales phenomenon, but the company has found (relative) success with its second, the DS sci-fi roleplaying game Mugen Kouro (Infinite Space). It was a slow week for Japanese software sales, which allowed Infinite Space's 38,394 copies to put it at the top of the Media Create sales chart for last week, its first week in stores. The three spots below that on the chart also belong to DS games: last week's top seller, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days sits at #2, followed by Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and Sloane and Machale's Mysterious Story. The #5 position is held by Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires on PS3.

Bplus explains how to play Bit Boy

We're thrilled about the generation-traveling concept of Bplus's Bit Boy -- much more than we have been about any previous Bplus game, to be honest -- but we don't really know that much about it. Nintendo Life spoke to Bernd Geiblinger, art director at Bplus, and got a rundown of the maze game. "As Bit Boy!! is a very old-school, arcade-style action game," Geiblinger said, "your main aim is to get the ultimate high score by rescuing friends, eating fruit and defeating monsters that roam the levels." As the technological level progresses, the protagonist Kubi increases in complexity as well, gaining access to special attacks and a jump move that allows him to "jump onto objects to hide himself from enemies."Geiblinger also discusses some extra modes, as well as the chiptune-based sound design.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wii viewed as 'intriguing' to BioWare

Speaking to IndustryGamers.com, BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka said that the renowned RPG dev is "intrigued by the idea of developing on Wii," but that it has "nothing to announce right now." Right now? "We do have some unannounced projects that we're not ready to talk about yet, and they are different from some things we've done in the past," Muzyka continued. He stated that "[BioWare's] goal, really long-term, is to broaden our base and continue to differentiate and have diversity of choice on different platforms, because we know there are different audiences on platforms like mobile and Wii." If it were to create a title for Nintendo's console, BioWare would strongly consider "[what] the Wii audience [is] looking for, and what would we want to deliver that has emotionally powerful narrative?," adding that it "probably wouldn't be exactly the same as everything else we do; we did a DS game and that was already very different from what we've done before." Actually, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (the game in question) was an RPG -- and a very good one at that -- that exploited the DS hardware nicely. We imagine Wii owners would be plenty happy to play something that is as tailored made for their systems.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Interview: Tecmo's Keisuke Kikuchi and Red Entertainment's Naoki Morita on Nostalgia

Tecmo's Nostalgeo no Kaze, being localized as Nostalgia by Ignition Entertainment, is a fantasy RPG set in a fictionalized version of our own world in the late 19th century. In this steampunk-inspired world, a young man named Eddy searches for legendary treasures, traveling around the world ... on his zeppelin. During E3, we had the opportunity to speak briefly with producer Keisuke Kikuchi (best known for creating Fatal Frame) and director Naoki Morita (known for his work on Sega's Sakura Taisen series, which is finally coming to North America) about the inspiration behind the fanciful Nintendo DS RPG, and about life after the Tecmo-Koei merger.

Tingle teaser site updates with unhelpful video

As promised, today brings new updates to Nintendo's Tingle website, though the updates are brief, inscrutable, and tell us absolutely nothing about whatever game this site is teasing. The TV on the left side of the Flash site now shows one of three brief, blurry videos before cutting out to static. We've dutifully captured the videos for you here (see them after the break), but in case you don't have about fifteen seconds to watch, we'll summarize for you: the first features Tingle and an unidentified figure dancing, the second shows Tingle standing around with two other characters, both of whom are dressed in Tingle-style clothing, and the last clip shows Tingle floating on his balloon. So what have we learned about the new game? Tingle's in it ... along with some other characters.

Review: Miami Law (DS)

Hudson Soft's Miami Law isn't a perfect adventure game by modern or classic standards. Gamers born after the era of floppy disks may find the menu-driven presentation archaic, and adventure devotees may take issue with the game's logic, and dismiss its minigames as pointless distractions from the story. However, Miami Law succeeds in the one aspect that an adventure game really needs to: the story. While it may cover well-worn buddy cop territory, Miami Law's storyline was gripping and well-told enough to keep me playing through the trial-and-error annoyances.
