Watch your socks, this Samus cosplay will knock them off

Cosplay is a double-edged sword. There's the scary edge, of course, with some less than savvy design work and implementation (if you care to put it so kindly). Then there's the awesome side, the side where we see things like this. Add this blog post to the second category. Frankly, this Samus Aran costume is about as awesome as it gets. We mean that in the true sense of awesome too, as in "to inspire awe." Seriously, if you look at some of these pictures, you'd think they were screenshots from a new Metroid game. The costume was made by Thaís Jussim, a Brazillian cosplayer who goes by the alias Yuki. She's created plenty of costumes -- which can be viewed at her website -- but this one takes the cake. It weighs about 23 pounds and contains 73 LEDs. Add a Nerf blaster into the arm cannon and it would be perfect.[Via GoNintendo]Source - Metroid Database interview with Thais JussimSource - YukiCosplay.comPermalink | Email this | Comments

Retailer expects UK consumers to see Wii price rise

Retailers in the UK may end up raising consumer prices for Wii following Nintendo's own price hike, according to two sources: 1) common sense, and 2) Don McCabe, managing director of Chips. "I don't think any retailer has got the ability to soak up that sort of margin change," McCabe told GamesIndustry.biz. "I think I saw one story that said the supermarkets wouldn't be passing the price point on but I think they will. I don't think any retailer can take that sort of squeeze."If the £20 Nintendo is adding to retailer prices is passed on to consumers, the Wii will now cost £199 ($275), a price that McCabe thinks Nintendo could have gotten away with from the very beginning. Now that the price is going up, "It will have a negative effect on the sales... I think we'll still end up with shortages come Christmas again, but through the summer it's going to have an effect." So at a higher price, McCabe expects, Nintendo will still sell every Wii this winter.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles, Wii ports of RE0 and REmake all shambling to North America

Click to embiggen. This is thriller -- thriller morning! First revealed via Famitsu scans, Capcom has officially confirmed the existence of the new Wii Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles -- and confirmed a North American release at the same time! The Darkside Chronicles is based on the Resident Evil 2 timeline and stars Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield in an Umbrella Chronicles-style rail shooter with "a more in-depth co-op experience" and a new "Evade system." The Cavia-developed shooter is expected this winter. In addition, Capcom is localizing the Wii ports of Resident Evil Zero (which Capcom's US branch previously declined at least twice) and the Resident Evil remake (which, as a port of a remake, is basically a zombie itself now) as a new "Resident Evil Classics" line for release this year. Both games feature new Wii Remote controls and will sell at a $29.99 price point, just like Nintendo's own ported Gamecube games!Update: Check Famitsu for a trailer!

GameCube era even depressed Miyamoto

Sometimes, one might assume that super-genius game developers don't think the way that you do, but it's just not so! Take, for instance, Shigeru Miyamoto, who you might know for his work on pure undiluted joy. He recently told Japanese mag Famitsu that several aspects of the way Nintendo operated during the N64 and GameCube years made him "very sad." Hey, Shiggy, us too!Of course, we probably have slightly different reasoning. Miyamoto complained about the company trying to follow its competitors during that era, saying, "I was endlessly fascinated with 3D worlds, but what with all the issues I had to tinker with in terms of rendering and processing speed, it got to the point where I didn't know who was making the games any longer." We would have more simply said that "a lot of games for those systems were very, very bad," but it's nice to know the big guy gets where we're coming from.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hollywood executive expects streaming movies, TV on Wii this year

Lionsgate's president of digital media, Curt Marvis, believes that streaming movies and TV will be available on the Wii this year. It doesn't really sound like a strong belief, or one that he can back up with any evidence: "I think when we see the Wii come into the market with the ability to stream movies," Marvis told The Cut Scene, "which I think is maybe going to happen as soon as this year, I think that's going to be a big marketplace for digital distribution."So when, and if, that does happen, Lionsgate is on board. The Cut Scene points out that Marvis does refer to the Wii streaming movies as opposed to downloading them, which suggests that he may be familiar enough with the platform to understand its limitations.Of course, it is a fact that streaming TV is coming to the Wii, both in the form of Nintendo's own "Wii no Ma Channel," which will provide original content from Nintendo, and Fujisoft's Minna no Theater Wii, whose offerings seem limited to content of Japanese origin, like anime and Ultraman. It's possible Lionsgate could be expecting to make a deal with Fujisoft, or that another service is imminent. Of course, it's also possible that he's guessing there will be a Wii movie service this year because he wants there to be.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Majesco revenues shoot up 75% (Thanks, Cooking Mama & Jillian Michaels!)

Just like fellow small-time publisher SouthPeak, Majesco is raking in some serious moolah. The company is reporting that net revenues for its first fiscal quarter (ending January 31, 2009) are at $32.8 million, a 75.8% increase over the same period last year. Also, net income increased 54% to $4.2 million. The massive cash influx is all due to strong sales numbers in Majesco's casual games line. Cooking Mama, and Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009 are counted as the breadwinning titles, as the latter has sold over 500,000 copies. Yes, half a million ... you can pick your jaw off the floor now. Who said third-parties can't be successful on Nintendo platforms?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dark Ops Wii Light Gun: It's the Wii light gun Jason Statham would use

The Cobalt Flux-developed Dark Ops Wii Light Gun is one of the newest peripherals vying for consumer attention. It's marketed to those of us who want to look Transporter-cool while playing Umbrella Chronicles ... oh, and to those of you who're simply tired of white peripherals.Per the item description, the Dark Ops gun allows for independent use of the Wii nunchuck, gives easy access to the Wiimote's face buttons, and sports a nifty Lock 'N Load feature that totally makes the remote look like a clip. For your gun. A gun clip. Like, totally. All that for only $19.95. We're guessing the light gun's accuracy is significantly increased if its wielder dons a tuxedo, maintains a calm (yet cool!) demeanor, and kills bad guys for a living.[Via GoNintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Without a doubt, the "Classic Rock" Rock Band Track Pack is real. The ESRB clued us into its existence, but a recent listing at GameStop reveals a price and release date: May 19th for $29.99. Capcom: Don't count out a US Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Capcom's US branch is keeping hope alive for a Western release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes, the Versus fighter featuring Capcom faves and Tatsunoko creations including Science Ninja Team Gatchaman. (Yes: Science. Ninja. Team.)Christian Svensson, Capcom's bizdev and strategic planning VP, told VideoGamer.com, "Do not rule [a Western release] out. That is all I can say right now," adding, "We are still actively working on having that happen. I can't say it's happening definitively. I couldn't give you a time frame, but as badly as the fans want it, we want to bring it."According to Svensson, a combination of licensing issues and reassembling the dev team at Eighting to make any necessary changes are the major hurdles. "The Tatsunoko rights are split as far as how they are held in the west," he explained. "Tatsunoko obviously holds all of the rights in Japan so they can grant all of those characters usage through Japan very easily.""To be fair, the team that did it is working on something else now," Svensson added, "so actually also clawing back the resources to do a localised version, to make any changes that are needed to get through those licensing issues, these are all things that need to be aligned before we can actually profit from this happening."Permalink | Email this | Comments

Seeing stars: Club Nintendo launches in Australia

Club Nintendo has finally launched in Australia, offering a sort of hybrid version of the older European Stars Catalogue and the US/Japan Club Nintendo models. Like the new US Club, the Australian site offers exclusive goods in exchange for points earned by purchasing games; however, the store uses the same "Stars Catalogue" nomenclature used for Europe's mostly-virtual offerings. The new Catalogue currently has but five items available, but that list of five includes the Game & Watch Collection (as found on the OFLC!) and one sort-of-awesome item we don't have in the US: these Mario face towels. They just cost 1300 Stars, 250 of which you can get for signing up! [Via IGN]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
