Rumor: DS Lite Onyx gets discontinued

It's pretty tough to be edgy and goth when so many people use you to pretend to pet dogs, but the Onyx DS Lite model has done its best to pull it off. Now, sadly, the black sheep of the DS Lite family is moving on to receive its greater reward, having been discontinued by Nintendo, according to a supposed Gamestop newsletter.Does that mean those of you who missed out will never own a jet black DS? No, of course not. You can just expect to pay more for one that has a couple of cameras attached.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo may publish World of Goo in Japan

Siliconera found a new Japanese trademark registration, for something called ... hmm, "World of Goo?" Oh, wait, that's probably just that WiiWare game, World of Goo, that came out in other territories last year and was loved by all. 2D Boy's puzzle masterpiece has yet to hit Japan, but it could soon, judging by this registration. Surprisingly, Nintendo is the registering company, meaning that it may choose to publish World of Goo in Japan. That's a testament to Nintendo's high estimation of the game's quality belief that it will sell! World of Goo isn't the first Western WiiWare game from a smaller developer to be picked up by a huge publisher for Japanese release. Square Enix released Frontier Developments' LostWinds in December.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

MySims Party raises roof this March

What a glorious day, which was only made better by EA's announcement that MySims Party will be available for Wii and DS this March. Yes, the saccharin collection of minigames -- 40 in the DS version and 50 on the Wii -- will keep you smiling ... like you just ate the family pet and nobody knows.MySims Party is part of EA's initiative to design more titles that appeal to the console's demographic. EA is likely taking a cue from 2K Games, which has found minigame success with its Carnival Games series. Next up for the MySims on Wii and DS: MySims Racing. Then, we speculate: Legend of MySims, Super Smash MySims and MySims Fit.Permalink | Email this | Comments

VC Tuesday: Bubble Bobble Wii rises to the top

There's a lovely selection of retro gaming available on the Japanese Virtual Console today, including Ogre Battle and one of Falcom's myriad Dragon Slayer games, but the real retro hotness is found on WiiWare. Lucky Japanese Wii owners will get to play Bubble Bobble Wii, and we certainly hope it isn't terrible. The last Bubble Bobble on Nintendo hardware wasn't so great, but that was back when Taito was licensing its properties out to whomever. We also hope Okiraku Slot Car Racing isn't terrible, if only because a game about slot car racing sounds kind of hilarious. After Family Glide Hockey, we're not holding out too much hope.

Korean game industry should be more like Nintendo, says president

"A lot of our elementary school children have Nintendo [DS]. Why can't our companies develop products like that?" These were the words of South Korean president Lee Myung-bak during his visit to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. Lee wants to bolster the Korean game industry to rival the success of Nintendo, but local game companies agree that stagnant software support in Korea won't see that happening anytime soon. It's for that very same reason that GamePark Holdings' GP2X (a Korean-made handheld system which relies on homebrew) isn't exactly flying off the shelves. Without any sort of big-name software like Mario or Zelda included, Mr. Lee's dream won't come true. This is a sentiment shared by Korean developers in every sector - from mobile gaming to internet-based and PC software. If the Korean government could find a way of supporting the software industry better, helping out developers like Pentavision and NCsoft, then maybe Korea might get the ball rolling.[Via Game Daily]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

GTA Chinatown Wars features Wi-Fi connection, but offline multiplayer

There appears to be some confusion over what multiplayer options will be included in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. The DS game will feature support for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, but the connectivity does not expand to multiplayer.Instead, multiplayer is limited to local system play. A flyer from New York Comic Con (via GoNintendo) shows the game will include competitive and cooperative modes -- although no other details were revealed. While Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection won't be used for multiplayer, it will allow players to communicate and interact with their friends. For example, you'll be able to share favorite locations, chat live through in-game instant messaging, and trade in-game items. Stats can also be uploaded to Rockstar's Social Club site. Through the Social Club, Rockstar is promising "special contests, events, and promotions," although what those will entail is still unclear at this moment.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Codemasters talks Overlord, working with Wii

It might not be a good time to port your game to the Wii right now. With Dead Rising causing many jaws to hit the floor in disgust, confidence isn't in ready supply. Enter Overlord: Dark Legend brand manager Dan Robinson, who doesn't want you to think his game is just being slapped together.Codemasters "realized quite early on if we just did a port of 'Overlord' or 'Overlord 2' onto the Wii, we'd get slighted," Robinson told MTV Multiplayer. The most important thing for his company is that "the game works with the control system." He explained that when making a game on a Nintendo console, a developer has to "make sure that it hits all the buttons that Nintendo fanboys want," because it can be "dead in the water before you've even started." Viewing the Wii as something more than a system to make a quick buck on ... that is a good start! Codemasters, like Sega, is looking for that hardcore buck, too. "I think it's definitely more of a hardcore game than you've got on the Wii at the moment," he said. "I think this gives us an opportunity to show them that the Wii can actually do games like this, and it actually works and it can make good fun." Casual players need not feel left out, however, as he thinks there are "elements of it" that will appeal to them.Overlord: Dark Legend is currently slated for release this summer.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

VC in Brief: Wolf of the Battlefield: MERCS

Wolf of the Battlefield: MERCS (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)We say: download it!

MERCS is a pretty badass game. It has all of the key elements needed for an action game circa the early '90s: a buff hero; explosions; and wave after wave of expendable enemy soldiers. My entire time with the title has been a treat, so if you're a fan of shmups or action games in general, you should check this out.

Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band Wiikly: Rush's Moving Pictures album

Rush's Moving Pictures album is this week's regurgitated Rock Band content for the Wii. Well, that's not exactly accurate, as Wii rockers will have to pay $2 for each track, rather than pay $11 for the whole package, like Xbox 360 and PS3 owners.
Rush - Moving Pictures (200 Wii points apiece)

  • "Tom Sawyer"
  • "Red Barchetta"
  • "YYZ"
  • "Limelight"
  • "The Camera Eye"
  • "Witch Hunt"
  • "Vital Signs"

Videos for the tracks can be found after the break. We're still waiting to hear when "new" Rock Band Weekly tracks will become available for Wii, but last we heard, it should still be sometime this month.
