Atlus announces Dokapon Journey, delays

Last year, developer Sting announced two new games in their Dokapon board game/RPG series: Dokapon Kingdom for Wii and PS2 and Dokapon Journey! for DS. Atlus picked up Kingdom and released it in October, seemingly leaving the DS game behind. Apparently, Wii and PS2 owners bought a sufficient number of copies of Dokapon Kingdom, because Atlus has announced that they're localizing Dokapon Journey, for release on April 14 -- just as Amazon.ca "predicted"!In another press release, Atlus announced delays for some of their upcoming handheld games. The mindblowingly awesome-looking Tokyo Beat Down is now coming out March 31st, The Dark Spire is scheduled for April 14th, and Steal Princess is out April 21st. We don't mind having all the Atlus releases spaced out a bit, really.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

EA announces Dead Space for Wii, hints at MotionPlus support

Here's a weird surprise out of EA's ongoing Q3 financial earnings conference call: CEO John Riccitiello revealed an upcoming Dead Space game for the Wii, saying, "We're bringing core intellectual properties and franchises in categories we think have legs on the Wii platform. A good example of this is Dead Space. We're bringing a Wii title to the market this year and it is absolutely going to be the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC SKUs this past year."Riccitiello had previously hinted at the title obliquely in a July VentureBeat interview, saying "Go look at Dead Space and imagine playing that game with a wand and a Nunchuk. If they improve the precision, then you could have a good experience," in reference to the MotionPlus peripheral. In a portion of the call following his mention of Dead Space, Riccitiello said that EA is "taking great advantage of [Nintendo's] new hardware addition with Motion Sensor [sic] and what that's going to give us is the kind of gameplay we think is going to rival Nintendo on their own platform."At this point, we don't know if the Wii game is an adaptation of the original or a new title in the series, nor do we have a release date. We'll let you know the details as soon as possible.

GO DEEP INSIDE Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers

This is it, folks. The final trailer you're going to see before Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers releases next week. If zombie slaughter, scantily clad ladies, and ridiculous dialogue interest you in the least, then you'll want to check this trailer out (we've embedded it after the break, as it's rated M). It has all of those things, not to mention big, bold text.

Ubisoft buys Action Pants Inc., making sports game for Wii

Publishing giant Ubisoft has announced its acquisition of Vancouver-based Action Pants Inc., along with plans to utilize the studio on a new sports game exclusively for Wii. Considering that most recent publisher news has concerned layoffs, we're pretty happy to report the birth of Ubisoft's first in-house studio on the west coast of North America. "The creative talent at Action Pants made the decision an easy one," said Ubisoft's executive director of worldwide production studios, Christine Burgess-Quemard. Co-founder and executive partner at Action Pants Inc., Simon Andrews, shared the excitement and said the two companies have "similar values." Considering those "values" have included Ubiporting crappy games to the console in the past, let's hope these two skip the foreplay and get right down to the nitty gritty: creating actual worthwhile experiences on the Wii.[Thanks, Tom!]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

More Screens of Majesco's Major Minor's Majestic March

Despite Dave's troubling experience with Major Minor's Majestic March, we remain hopeful for the music game, which is scheduled for release March 24th (the perfect month for this game). We refuse to believe that the team of developer Nana-On-Sha and illustrator Rodney Alan Greenblat can produce anything but wonder, even though Nana-On-Sha has a history of not-that-great games outside of the delightful PaRappa series. We must admit, however, that we have one issue with the game: it can be really hard to tell old screens from new ones. It may be totally dynamic in motion (with the music playing, and all) but the screens are all just pictures of Major Minor's back with varying numbers of musicians lined up in a window on the bottom. We're still totally happy to see the new ones Majesco sent out, however.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Westwood Games founder forms console dev Jet Set Games

Before Westwood Studios became a prime example of EA's once-voracious appetite, it used to be synonymous with the top tier of real-time strategy development. Though the company may be nothing but a logo on some oversized cardboard game boxes now, co-founder Brett Sperry is far from gone. He's launching a new studio, with a few other Westwood alums, called Jet Set Games. Before you dust off your clicking finger, be forewarned that Jet Set has, for now, relegated itself to Wii, PS3, 360 and iPhone development. We can't wait to see what titles the new company cranks out, as long as they don't sport the tragic, pseudo-swinger pastiche of its website.[Via Big Download]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band Wiikly: Blondie, All-American Rejects, Boston

Don't think of them as leftovers! Think of these Rock Band DLC oldies as freeze-dried goodies, ready to be served up for the Wii. We still don't see a pattern to how these track selections are being made, but we'll ask Harmonix.Individual Tracks (200 Wii points apiece)

  • "Hanging on the Telephone" - Blondie
  • "Dirty Little Secret" - All American Rejects
  • "Hitch A Ride" - Boston
  • "Peace Of Mind" - Boston
  • "Smokin" - Boston
  • "Something About You" - Boston

Although "Rock Band Wiikly" could very well be with us until mid-2010, the "new" Rock Band Weekly tracks should become available for Wii sometime this month.[Thanks, Riley]Permalink | Email this | Comments

See Europe at War in new Military History Commander game

PSP and DS will soon be home to a brand new turn-based strategy game from Koch Media. Military History Commander - Europe at War is the first in a "new series of games." Set in a World War II, players can choose to play as either the Axis or the Allied forces. From the looks of things, this will be a rather standard grid-based strategy affair, with visuals akin to the Advance Wars series of games. Six scenarios are planned for the handhelds, including Operation Barbarossa and D-Day. Players will also be able to create 50 different inventions and recruit famous historical commanders throughout the game. The in-game artwork is done by Osprey Publishing. For now, the game has been announced for release in Europe only. We'll have to wait and see if it sees the light of day in the States as well.

DS sells 2 million in Korea

The Wii has had a tough time in Korea, but the same cannot be said of the DS. The little handheld that could has sold over 2 million units in the region since it launched little over a year ago -- a surprise considering the company only passed the 1 million milestone last month. Keep it up, Koreans. You have excellent taste![Via Go Nintendo]Source - Telecoms Korea (subscription required)Permalink | Email this | Comments

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings includes unlockable Fate of Atlantis [update]

click for full gallery, Dr. Jones
LucasArts has released the first screens of (the Wii version of) Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. While they may not look as great as the obviously pre-rendered trailer, the new Wii/PSP/PS2/DS adventure has an intriguing feature list that may help us look past the jaggies-plus-bloom combo. The game's "Hot Set" environments are "completely interactive," full of objects and features that can be used as weapons. Staff of Kings also features action sequences allowing players to "fly a biplane in a canyon trench, take the reigns of a wild elephant through the streets of Istanbul and navigate a raft down a raging river." The biplane sequence, along with a tank battle game, is even unlockable as a four-player minigame! Even the main game allows for cooperative play. The Wii version, of course, uses the Wii Remote to control the whip, for both fighting and environmental interaction. The PSP version apparently contains six short-session "burst gameplay" modes, which sound like individual challenge levels. But, really, who cares about this game: you can unlock the classic adventure game, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis! We aren't sure which systems have the unlockable game; the official website doesn't specify, so maybe it's all of them! [Update: We've heard back from a rep at LucasArts, who tells us that "The Fate of Atlantis will be on the Wii version only." Sorry, DS gamers. We know ... the stylus seems perfect!]
