Overlord: Dark Legend producer says game 'looks like the 360 version'

Overlord: Dark Legend Associate Producer Dean Scott admits it may be a "lame cliche," but he believes the dark master's Wii incarnation "looks like the 360 version." Speaking with Videogamer.com, Scott could hardly keep his composure as he detailed how confident he was in the visuals for the upcoming action-adventure game, exclaiming it "blows away just about everything else" on the Wii.Scott may be biased, considering he is the producer of the game, but Wii owners may want to take notice if for no other reason than to help fill the dark Pikmin-sized void in their hearts. Overlord: Dark Legend lands on the Wii this summer; a companion DS version, Overlord: Minions, will release later this year.

Cause for celebration: Boom Blox Bash Party won't use Friend Codes

MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo spoke to Amir Rahimi about the new features in the just-announced Boom Blox Bash Party, learning exciting new details that make the sequel sound much more tantalizing than a simple collection of new levels would be.First off, no friend codes. Players will be able to download and upload new levels, and rate others' work, without being hindered by Nintendo's overblown security measures. Finally, other games are catching up with Blast Works! Totilo suggested that Spielberg should "direct" a level for download, and Rahimi told him to "Consider the request scheduled".In addition to downloadable levels, Bash Party features a new move: the slingshot. Players will be able to pull the Wiimote back, then release (a button, most likely) and launch items forward. What it won't feature is MotionPlus, because the team didn't get access to the tools soon enough. But it's EA -- just wait a year for the next sequel. Update: Hey, remember that one rumor about a major game that wouldn't use Friend Codes? Ding!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kamehame-awww: Atari recalls Dragon Ball Origins in Australia

If you're in Australia and you've been holding off on picking up a copy of the delightful Dragon Ball Origins, your wait has just been artificially extended: Atari has issued a recall in Australia for every copy of Dragon Ball Origins on store shelves, due to an apparent mis-rating. Origins has been out in the region since December. The cause seems to be a lazy OFLC: Dragon Ball Origins was given the same PG rating as other recent Dragon Ball games, but Origins features, well, multiple pants-free scenes. The first such scene occurs within the first hour of gameplay!Atari will reissue the game once it's been re-rated and labeled accordingly. If you've already got it, congratulations! Instant collector's item.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Prepare to evade space on February 16

Click image for more colorful screens
It didn't make it to us in January as hoped, but a press release just hit our inbox, asking us to pass along the information that Evasive Space, the game that Yuke's and High Voltage have been collaborating on, is going to be available to download on February 16 for 1,000 Wii Points. A bit pricey? Sure, but for such an interesting and unique game (it's a shmup without all of the, uh, shmupping), we're willing to shell out and give it a try. What say you all?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Click image to head down the mountain of screens
Hudson has just sent over some new screens for its upcoming snowboarding game, Snowboard Riot. While we've yet to see any folks vandalizing storefronts or yanking truck drivers out of their vehicles, we will say there is plenty of snowboarding going on. So, at least Hudson got that half of the game's name right. Check out the new screens in our gallery below.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Latest Nintendo financial report sees predictable, record growth

Before enslaving the planet and putting all of us to work in the mines, toiling away for mushrooms and fire flowers until we're nothing but skin, bones and broken dreams, Nintendo has seen fit to reveal its latest fiscal report. Summary: Nintendo makes money. During the period of April to December 2008, Nintendo enjoyed global sales of 1,536 billion yen ($17 billion), an increase of almost 17% compared to the same period in 2007. Operating profits were also up to 501 billion yen ($5 billion), showing a 27% over the same period in 2007. It's not all sunshine and lollipops, however, as Nintendo reported losses of 18% in both recurring and net profits. With Nintendo's 2008 fiscal year ending March 31st, it has upped its forecast as far as the DS is concerned, with hardware sales expected to rise by 3% to 31.5 million globally and software predicted to drop 7% to 193 million. Moving on to the Wii, Nintendo revised its prediction for both hardware and software sales -- predicted Wii sales drop 3% to 26.5 million systems and software lowers to 193 million games.

Space Invaders Extreme 2 is so real you can preorder it

Importer NCSX has begun taking preorders for Space Invaders Extreme 2 on the DS, which means that their distributor has probably started listing it, and it's therefore pretty likely to really be a real game. There's no word yet about a PSP version. NCSX's preorder listing confirms the March 26 release date we previously posted. Who's got $43.90?Thanks to the efforts of ... someone who is better than we are at reading Japanese, the new "Bingo Mode" is detailed as well. In this new mode, an onscreen Bingo card fills up as you shoot Invaders, and you win when ... you know, you would normally win at Bingo. Except, instead of yelling "Bingo", your DS will issue more of a "pew pew pew" noise. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Leipzig Games Convention dead, long live Games Convention Online

Or rather, GAMES CONVENTION ONLINE as the press release puts it. The Leipzig Games Convention, Europe's premier video games showcase, will be closing its doors in 2009 thanks to competition from Cologne's Gamescom, a new event which premieres this Summer. Gamescom boasts the full support of the industry, which it has snatched from Leipzig's grasp. This includes acting as host for GDC Europe, which had previously been hosted at Leipzig alongside the Games Convention.
The Leipzigger Messe isn't done with games, though, as it will play host to a new event this year. Games Convention Online will take part in Leipzig between July 31 and August 2, and will focus on "the most dynamic market in the gaming industry: browser, client and mobile games." An exciting prospect, by all accounts, but we suspect it may not see as great a turnout as Gamescom might. As if the news couldn't get any sadder, Leipzig's CEO Wolfgang Marzin says the industry can come back any time (please!). "If the industry is again in search of a platform for console and PC games and hardware with the know-how of the GC - Games Convention, we will immediately be available."Permalink | Email this | Comments
