Rumor: Best Buy ad fuels the $50 Wii price drop fire

What you see above is the third circular image we've spotted in just five days advertising a Nintendo Wii price cut to $199.99. At this point, though the image that a Kotaku tipster sent in could very well be made of fancy pixel work by someone with too few extracurriculars on their schedule, we're fairly confident in a forthcoming price cut reveal.Considering the impending holiday season and those other consoles getting recent price drops, it seems likely something will occur with the big N in the upcoming months. If Miss Cleo's Michael Pachter's predictions based on slowing sales are any indication though, we'll know soon enough.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Toy Story Mania receives a ray gun controller

It's only fitting that a Wii game based on a theme park attraction would be controlled with a device based on a toy. Peripheral company Thrustmaster just announced its first Disney-licensed accessory, a Wii gun shell reminiscent of Buzz Lightyear's ray gun, coinciding with the European release of Toy Story Mania! The Ray Gun NW is expected in European stores by the end of September at a price of €14.99.Sure, it's a bit frivolous, but maybe you can think of the gun as enhancing the 3-D effect found in part of the game. Even without glasses, it would totally look like Buzz Lightyear's gun is, like, right there in your hand!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

European Nintendo Downloads: Learning with the Golden Axe

We're going to be in the minority on this one, but that's okay: for us, by far the most exciting new addition to Europe's Wii Shop this week is the arcade version of Golden Axe. More of you may be happy to see Super Star Wars, however. Or, if you're teensy, Learning with the PooYoos. DSiWare offers a cute-sounding camera app that lets you add MySims characters to photos. The great thing about this, of course, is that MySims characters are unbelievably cute.

  • Golden Axe (Arcade, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points)
  • Super Star Wars (SNES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
  • Magnetis (WiiWare, 1-4 players, 500 Wii Points)
  • Learning with the PooYoos: Episode 1 (WiiWare, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)
  • MySims Camera (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points)

Put your Fear Factor GBA cartridge to good use (turn it into a thumb drive!)

Look, we all buy crappy games every now and then ... it just happens. But instead of hiding those titles under a pile of dirty clothes or trading them in at GameStop for almost nothing, you can now convert them into thumb drives. That is, if they're the right size and shape, like the Advance Wars 2 cartridge you see above (via Go Nintendo). We don't know why someone would ruin that game to do this, so we suggest you target Fear Factor: Unleashed instead.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

EA done with Boogie franchise for now, SSX revived if market is 'ready'

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, EA Montreal general manager Alain Tascan discussed the possibility of a SSX franchise revival, saying, "If the market is there and is ready for a new one then we'll consider it." While Wii gamers have already hit the slopes with SSX Blur, the closest PS3 and Xbox 360 users have been to the franchise is through shoddy backwards compatibility features.Tascan also discounted a new installment in the rhythm music franchise, Boogie. According to Tascan, the franchise has been a success for EA and, while the publisher is proud of its work with the series, there are no plans for Boogie to return at this time. Thankfully, the games industry has plenty of music games to spare nowadays.[Via G4TV]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DSi-enhanced Idolm@ster is region-locked

Since the DSi was first announced, it's been difficult to precisely determine its regional limitations. Rumor spread that everything would be region-locked -- that all Japanese games would be incompatible with an American DSi. That's not true. So far, only DSiWare has been proven region-locked, as a function of region-specific DSi Shops. In addition, Nintendo has said that DSi-exclusive games would be region-locked. But you can still play any normal DS game on any DS system, including the DSi.NeoGAFfer t3nmilez provides an account that helps clarify the DSi region-locking situation. He imported The Idolm@ster Dearly Stars, which has extra camera features when used in a DSi, and it didn't register in his American DSi; though it worked in an American DS Lite and a Japanese DSi. From this, we can infer that (if his DSi isn't busted) DSi-enhanced games are regionally encoded just like DSi-only games. So if you want to play The Idolm@ster, make sure you have either a Japanese DSi or a DS Lite.[Via GoNintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

No More Heroes 2 supports Classic Controller, thanks to Monster Hunter

We happened to think that the motion control finishers in No More Heroes made the fighting a lot more interesting, but if you disagree, Grasshopper Manufacture has a solution. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle will allow players to use the Classic Controller, according to 1UP.Suda 51 told 1UP that the Classic Controller functionality is intended to attract Monster Hunter fans, many of whom play the game with the Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro (which is bundled with Monster Hunter 3). It's a purely optional move that may help get the game in the hands of more people.Warning: Some of the information in the 1UP article may be considered spoilers by more sensitive readers, including news about playable characters.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

LucasArts shows off Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron

With features like "16 player online multiplayer" and "simultaneous space and ground combat," Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron sounds like it should be on one of the current-gen consoles. But no, LucasArts is adamant about keeping the franchise on the handhelds, even going so far as to creating a DS version. We know what to expect from the PSP version, considering it's simply an upgraded version of the previous PSP-exclusive Battlefront. But what about the DS version? This video reveals some gameplay footage, and it looks drastically different from other incarnations of the franchise. The camera has been changed to a more top-down view, providing a much more fast-paced and arcade-like experience. The game is limited to just four players on the DS version, but a LucasArts producer insists that "the soul of Battlefront has been brought to Nintendo DS in a brand new way." We're wondering if, after watching the footage above, you agree.
