Let's Tap to the finish line

With this trailer, Sega has managed to pull our attention away from the "Rhythm Tap" mode in Let's Tap just long enough to notice one of the other games. The "Tap Runner" mode here is unusual, and not just because you play it by slapping a flat surface. There really aren't that many side-scrolling platformer racing games these days, outside of this, Sonic Rivals and -- kind of -- Metro-Cross. And Metro-Cross is hardly from "these days."Let's Tap's multiplayer racing looks like it could be enjoyable even if played by holding stuff. Like everything else in this game, the appeal is merely magnified by the novelty of being able to play without any stuff to hold. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Life-to-date sales of the biggest Nintendo games

We know that Nintendo is doing very well financially as of the end of fiscal 2008. And, of course, we know that hardware sales play a major role in that windfall. But how is Nintendo doing in terms of software sales? Very well, thank you! The company released a list of every million-selling first-party title on the Wii and DS as a supplement (PDF link) to its financial report, with no real surprises other than, perhaps, the monolithic bigness of some of the numbers. The best-selling Wii title, of course, is Wii Sports, which sold 45.7 million copies across North American and European bundle sales and standalone Japanese sales. The best-selling DS game: Nintendogs, at 22.3 million copies! We're just happy to see the wonderful Rhythm Heaven on the list, though there is something odd about it: according to the data, Rhythm Heaven sold 140,000 copies outside of Japan -- but the game didn't even come out in the West until April 5, after the end of the fiscal year. The full list is after the break. Spoiler alert: if you are the type of person who gets angry about Nintendo's success in the expanded market, this will anger you.[Via Kotaku]

Fever time: Taito announces European release for Space Invaders Extreme 2, Puzzle Bobble Galaxy

It's a totally exciting week for Space Invaders Extreme. First, the Xbox Live Arcade port was released in North America. Now, the DS sequel is officially headed to Europe, with Square Enix releasing this fall. We guess the company decided not to use the Space Invaders Extreme 2Remix title under which the game was previously listed. SIE 2 features a new "Beginner's Course" in addition to a weird "Bingo" system for unlocking the game's Fever Mode. New music, new power-ups, and "higher stage volume" are also included. To help tide lucky European gamers over until fall, Taito also announced that it will release Puzzle Bobble Galaxy this summer. It's Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move, with online play and new gameplay modes, including one in which you have a limited number of bubbles, and one in which you have one bubble per stage. The first English screens of both games are available in our galleries!

Joystiq hands-on: EA Sports Active

While Wii Fit never really felt like it could replace the gym experience entirely, EA Sports Active actually does feel like it offers an approximation -- and they did it simply by including a piece of rubber. Amazing, right? We took the new personal trainer for a spin yesterday, and while we don't know if this will give us a Charles Atlas body right away, it definitely felt like a substantial workout.Go on, "break" a sweat in our review ... behind the break. Sadly, bad puns do not burn any calories whatsoever.

Konami kind of announces Contra ReBirth for WiiWare

We'd love to be excited about the newly announced WiiWare release, Contra ReBirth, but it's a little tough when considering how Konami revealed its existence. The game recently appeared with little (read: no) fanfare on a Konami product page. Heck, we're not even sure if the thing is all original or a remix of an old game! It's like having your first-born child and letting your friends and family know by mentioning it under your breath as you drive past the hospital. What are you hiding, Konami? Is it ... a ginger?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Report: Nintendo most reputable game company, sixth overall

Maybe it's the portly plumber, or the kid in the green tunic, but there's something about Nintendo that makes it one of the most memorable companies in the world. According to the Reputation Institute's annual survey (via Forbes), Nintendo is not only the most reputable company in the games business, but actually sixth overall, just behind other big names such as Ikea and Johnson & Johnson. In fact, Nintendo is the only game company in the top 200 period.Nintendo has the success of the Wii and DS to thank for that, as it has undoubtedly helped shape the company's perception by invading more households than a famished Hamburglar. Majesco serving Cooking Mama 3 to E3 attendees

Majesco just sent out a very cute invitation to a Cooking Mama-themed party to be held during E3. Listed among the activities planned for the party: a chance to play Cooking Mama 3. What a nice way to announce a new game! The last "numbered" Cooking Mama was Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends on DS, so it seems likely that this latest iteration will be on the DS as well.It is very little surprise that Majesco and developer Cooking Mama Ltd. are planning another game. Cooking Mama is the cornerstone of Majesco's business, and we'd expect at least a couple of the "approximately 31 titles" the company plans to release (according to its financial report) to be Mama games. Probably more than a couple -- in addition to the newly announced 3, trademarks suggest both Babysitting Mama and Crafting Mama are on the way.Permalink | Email this | Comments

With a zany style expected of the Disgaea studio, Phantom Brave fills the all-important "super crazy Japanese SRPG" genre currently missing on the Wii.Permalink | Email this | Comments

A Witch's Tale finally coming this Fall

It's been nearly a year since we last saw A Witch's Tale. Well, it looks like NIS America is finally ready to bring it to the States this year. The horror-themed RPG takes full advantage of the DS touch screen by using a unique combat system based on your drawings. From the trailer, we can garner the entire game is controlled through the stylus. Players must draw various runes to cast spells to travel the six kingdoms and save princesses.Considering the gothic vibe oozing out of the game, we wouldn't be surprised if NIS America aimed for a Halloween release.Permalink | Email this | Comments
