Three new colors for DSi in Japan

Nintendo of Japan has announced plans to release the DSi console in three cheerful new colors: pink, lime green, and metallic blue. All three will be released on the same day, March 20, and will sell for 19,800 yen ($195), the same price as the currently available black and white DSi systems.Haters of the North American blue version will now be able to direct their ire toward these garish new colors, out of our reach though they may be. Fans of the blue may find themselves envious of these even more vivid colors. We're sorting out some rather complex emotions ourselves.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Revolution considering new Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword games

Revolution Software is stepping up efforts to bring back some of its classic adventure IPs. Founder Charles Cecil currently has two games in mind: Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword. The latter series is already undergoing a revival via next month's Broken Sword: Shadows of the Templars (Director's Cut); however, Cecil tells VideoGamer this might only be the beginning. If the Director's Cut of Shadows of the Templars for Wii and DS are successful, Revolution might consider doing more Director's Cuts for the other Broken Sword titles. This might even entail completely overhauling the 3D Broken Swords (numbers three and four in the series) into 2D versions for Nintendo's systems. A movie tie-in game could also be in the works, as Cecil reveals that Radar Pictures is interested in doing a Broken Sword film. In the case of Beneath a Steel Sky - another adventure title from the '90s - Cecil says it's "probably going to happen." He's just claiming everyone's too busy to work on it right now. Well, of course; with all those possible Broken Sword projects, it sounds like Revolution will be busy for awhile.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

John Carmack 'in talks' to make exclusive Wii game

Despite the fact that Nintendo really isn't his thing, John Carmack can't ignore how many Wii owners are out there. That's why he's been in talks to develop a title exclusively for the Wii, he told MTV Multiplayer."We've been pitched and talked about a project to do a title that would fit well on the Wii, and it's actually related to an iPhone title that we're doing," Carmack said. We know that id is working with Gameloft on the iPhone, but what game could he be referring to? We're going to place our bets on Orcs & Elves for the Wii."I'd like to do something there, because I love a lot of what Nintendo has done with the Wii and the DS, but it's just out of sync with the developments that are currently going on at id." So nothing is being worked on right now, but there's hope: Carmack has Wii on the brain. "I actually spend far more time playing Wii with my four year-old boy than I do with any other game console."Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

OFLC catches Prope's WiiWare game

After the miraculous announcement of Sega's plan to localize Let's Tap (a game so weird we kind of didn't expect it to make it to stores at all, much less worldwide), we're not too surprised to see Prope's other Wii project, the much more conventional, lower-risk Let's Catch for WiiWare, on its way out of Japan. But we are pleased to see it happening.Let's Catch is exactly what one would infer from the title: a game about playing catch, with multiple single-player modes (including a ... story mode?) and multiplayer. It's a concept so weird (or weirdly mundane) that we find it fascinating! Australia's OFLC ratings board has rated the game, suggesting that it will be released there soon -- and thus, probably worldwide.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sony and Nintendo sued for wireless tech

There are two ways to get a slice of the delicious Nintendo money pie: (1) Release a collection of mini-games for the Wii (look for Non-Denominational Church Carnival Games coming from Joystiq Publishing in Q3 2009!); or (2) Sue Nintendo. This road less traveled (option 2) has just been taken by Wall Wireless LLC of Plano, Texas, which is also suing Sony and Nokia for allegedly infringing on its patent for "Method and Apparatus for Creating and Distributing Real-Time Interactive Media Content Through Wireless Communication Networks and the Internet."Perhaps following the advice of some inspirational kitty poster, Wall Wireless refuses to limit its potential by naming an actual figure it's suing for; instead asking for "no less than a reasonable royalty." Good luck with the settlement, fellas!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DSi design history to be revealed in GDC talk

Nintendo will reveal some inside information about the new DSi at this year's Game Developers Conference. DSi Project Leader Masato Kuwahara will present a talk called "The Inspiration Behind Nintendo DSi Development" at the conference, discussing the system's new features, the decision process behind their inclusion, and "what kind of new software development opportunities the team had in mind."Last year, Nintendo delivered talks about the technical design of Wii Fit and the introduction of WiiWare. This DSi talk could potentially cover the subjects from both of those talks: new hardware and a new software download service! And we hate to be crass and reduce this no doubt fascinating talk to its potential news, but this would be a great opportunity for Nintendo to unveil the North American DSiWare launch lineup.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

VC Tuesday: Mr. Driller World's world debut

Arc System Works finally brings the classic Double Dragon to Japan's Virtual Console today. In the US, we've been lucky to have the opportunity to be killed by those two Abobos who come out of the cave since April! However, our "victory" in the Double Dragon availability department is eclipsed by the availability of Wallaby!!, a kangaroo-race betting game that will most certainly remain in Japan.

Once again, WiiWare is the real attraction in Japan, with downloadable Mr. Driller and the second installment of Square Enix's Crystal Defenders series.
