MadWorld won't run in 480p (consolation: multiplayer footage!)

Being Wii gamers, we're not total graphics snobs, but something like 480p support really should be the standard for new games by now. We guess Platinum Games didn't get the memo, as upcoming MadWorld will only run in 480i, IGN reports. Neither Platinum Games nor Sega have made an official statement as to why the game is stuck in 480i, but regardless of interlaces or progressives, you have to admit the game still looks sweet. For those of you who feel the same way, you might want to head past the break for a sneak peek at the game's multiplayer Blood Bath challenges. Still planning to pick up the game, despite 480i? Or is the deal totally off now?Source - MadWorld in 480i Source - First look at multiplayer [Via Go Nintendo]

Kanye West once tried to sex up Mario

The very best (read: easiest) posts are the ones that no amount of clever presentation could make any funnier -- in fact, any effort to do so could only fail miserably. Observe:"My game was very sexual," Kanye West told Details magazine, describing a hack he attempted to make on a home computer as a child. "The main character was, like, a giant penis. It was like Mario Brothers, but the ghosts were, like, vaginas. You'd have to draw in and program every little step. It literally took me all night to do a step, 'cause the penis, y'know, had little feet and eyes."... What's that, it's quittin' time at the blogging factory already? Well, thank you, Mr. West.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Punch-Out!! rated by ESRB, still coming 'first half 2009'

Readying Soda Popinski for battle with everyone's favorite underdog, Little Mac, takes time, folks. Today though, It seems that Nintendo may be getting closer to releasing the next iteration in the now aging series, Punch-Out!!, with the ESRB having officially rated the game as "Everyone 10+."Though we've yet to get our hands into Nintendo's punching gloves and see if the game's any good, based on screenshots and the little video we've seen we can wholeheartedly say (tongue fully in cheek) OMG PUNCH-OUT KING HIPPO AHHHH!1!11! Considering that the game's set for a "first half 2009" release window in Europe and the U.S., it has to be coming soon, right?Sorry to say this 9-year-olds, but it's time to suck it up and be patient. You'll hit the double digits soon! In the meantime, we'll be over here playing NES Punch-Out!! on your Wii. Without you.[Via PureNintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DS browser vs. DSi browser

Back in the days when the DSi was young (November), Eric demonstrated how slowly the system's browser operated, documenting the agonizing process of trying to read DS Fanboy on the device. Agonizing only in that it took a long time, we must clarify -- reading any incarnation of our site is a soothing and life-affirming experience, of course. But how much more or less agonizing is the process on the DSi browser than on the DS/DS Lite Opera browser? DotEd of the Opera N+ blog did a comparative speed test to find out.According to science (i.e. the one test seen in the video after the break), the DSi's browser loads the New York Times site much quicker than the DS Lite version; even better, it loads the text first, so you can read even while images are coming in. The browser on the DSi will end up getting a lot more use than the other one (on account of being free and not requiring two separate cartridges), so it's kind of nice that it actually works better.[Thanks, Fernando!]

GTA Chinatown Wars commercial shows off game, zings government

In addition to some timely humor about current events, this GameStop/Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars ad features the first footage of Rockstar's DS game in motion. While there may only be a few seconds of actual gameplay visible (actually a bunch of different windows, each showing a few seconds of gameplay), it's enough to make us take notice.Chinatown Wars is breathtakingly smooth in motion, especially for a DS game! The lighting looks great, and the semi-cel-shaded style works perfectly to make everything look clear and vivid. Of course, there's always the chance that the game won't look quite as good in reality as it does in ads!The commercial highlights the GameStop-exclusive (until the first buyer gets home and logs into GameFAQs) code for an extra in-game $10,000, which should be an attractive prospect to those of you not interested in using the regular cheat codes included in every GTA.
[Thanks, AJ!]

Activision CEO: Wii will outsell PS3 and 360 combined in 2009

During the Activision Q4 2008 earnings conference call earlier this month, CEO Mike Griffith laid out the company's predictions for 2009 hardware sales. According to Griffith, Activision predicts that both the Xbox 360 and PS3 will increase their installed bases by 8 million units between North America and Europe. The company expects the Wii installed base for the same regions to increase by over 16 million units. Without specifying platforms, Griffith's stated that Activision expects handhelds to increase by more than 21 million units.Prepare the bunker. Grab the supplies. It's time to get underground. The day Nintendo turns on Skynet and Wii Balance Boards begin enslaving their masters is fast approaching. Unless the humans fight back, of course.[Via CVG]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Original DSi design had two DS slots, disliked by Nintendo EAD

In the most recent (and arguably most forthright) installment of Iwata Asks, the Nintendo head honcho sat down to bounce a few questions off of a few members of the company's Development Engineering Department regarding the recently released Nintendo DSi. The devs outlined an interesting history of the shutterbugged handheld, one characterized on their end with "some frustration" -- apparently, sticking to the technological standard of an extremely popular device while simultaneously increasing its desirable features is a difficult compromise to make twice in two years. One of the interesting features that fell by the wayside during this compromise was an additional DS cart slot, allowing the handheld to house two titles simultaneously. This feature was apparently included in the DSi's initial design, but lent itself to a slightly bulkier frame for the handheld, much to the chagrin of Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development division. They shot the design down, leading to the single-cart, slimmed-down design that's currently taking Japan by storm. Man, where were those guys when the Virtual Boy was designed?Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

World of Goo coming to Japan in Q2

Earlier this month, a Japanese trademark for World of Goo was spotted, registered by Nintendo of Japan. This lead to conjecture that Nintendo would publish the indie WiiWare hit in that territory. Nintendo's Tom Prata has kindly confirmed the speculation, telling us that "Nintendo will distribute World of Goo for WiiWare in Japan starting in the second quarter of 2009."The company certainly seems taken with the game, which is now pretty much the poster child for WiiWare. At the DICE summit, 2D Boy's Kyle Gabler even joined Prata onstage for a presentation about Nintendo's interest in putting more indie games on WiiWare and DSiWare.Permalink | Email this | Comments
