Nintendo and Activision to be most profitable in 2009, survey says

Over 300 industry professionals have cast their votes to predict the most profitable game companies of 2009 in the "first ever" GI.biz Network Survey. Their answers weren't nearly as exciting, however, with Nintendo garnering a predictable 54.4 percent of the vote to be selected as top platform manufacturer. Nintendo systems do print money, after all.Similarly, the selection of Activision Blizzard (with 30.6 percent of the vote) to be the publisher most likely to dive into a pool of gold coins comes as little surprise. Activison Blizzard owns gaming's Automatic Money Generator(C), World of Warcraft, along with perennial mega-franchises like Call of Duty and Guitar Hero. For a more detailed breakdown of the poll results, head past the break.

New trailer for Sonic and the Black Knight (and Blaze the Cat)

Because you, the fans, demanded it, Sega is indeed including some of Sonic's pals in Sonic and the Black Knight. Clearly the best part of any Sonic game is the supporting cast. The latest trailer features an epic battle between Sonic and the fan-favorite Blaze the Cat, one of the more complex, multifaceted characters in the Sonic canon. In this game, Blaze plays the part of Percival, one of the Knights of the Round Table. She also fights with Sonic for some reason. The good news is that once you defeat her in the game's story mode, you can unlock Blaze, so you won't have to play through the whole Sonic game as Sonic. Whew.Permalink | Email this | Comments

DSi preorders available at Amazon and GameStop

Anxious to secure a Nintendo DSi without having to wait in some crazy line? Online retailers have begun taking pre-orders of the North American version of the system, so you can buy now and not have to worry about stalking Wal-Mart late April 4 to be first in line on April 5 (You are free, as usual, to stalk Wal-Mart for other purposes). You can order your DSi for $169.99 at Amazon or GameStop (in black or blue). If you want extra stuff, you can order a bundle from GameStop (again in black or blue) that contains the system and a "Folio Starter Kit" consisting of a case, screen protectors, a game case, earbuds, and a car adapter. For a better look at the system that you might be buying, check MTV Multiplayer's first-ever images of the English-language DSi menu. As expected, it looks exactly like the menu from the Japanese version with the crucial addition of comprehensible text. It features the same photo manipulation, photo arranging, and sound altering functions from the original suite of DSi software, along with upgradeable firmware and, of course, the DSi Shop.

Mario does battle with Halo's Spartans ... again

We don't know what Mario has against the Halo universe, or why Spartans can't stand denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. But, senseless though it may be, the two worlds have met again on the battlefield and, as you can see after the break, the conflict makes their last meeting look like a tetherball match. Now that the ground is littered with helmet fragments and soaked with the blood of Yoshis, can the two move toward peace? Or at least unite in a mutual hatred of Kratos? Only time will tell.

Amazon makes most of Master of Illusion's price disappear

Amazon.com has pulled a Deal of the Day out of its hat, in the form of Nintendo's Master of Illusion. The magic trick sim, er, magic training game -- or whatever you want to call this weird software -- has had its price halved today, and today only, to an impulse-level $9.98. That's very cheap for a first-party Nintendo game -- or very expensive for a deck of cards, if you choose to look at it that way!Much like Clubhouse Games and WarioWare: Touched, Nintendo of Japan plans to break out individual tricks from Master of Illusion for sale as DSi downloads. We figure that if you're into e-magic, you might as well grab the whole thing now instead of waiting for the DSiWare version that may not even appear in North America!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Echoes of Time coming to Europe on March 27

Europeans rejoice! You don't have much longer to wait for the next Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles title than your American cousins. Both the DS and Wii versions will be available on March 27 and, as you're no doubt aware, will allow you to play across platforms -- similar to the original Gamecube title's gameplay; sans requiring you and your mates to purchase otherwise-pointless GBA link cables. Square Enix hasn't given us a price for the game yet, but we'll keep you updated.Permalink | Email this | Comments

DSi launch title: Rhythm Heaven dated April 5

Nintendo has the perfect companion piece for that DSi you'll probably end up buying on April 5: Rhythm Heaven! Coincidentally, Rhythm Heaven will also be the best way to console yourself if you walk into a store and find DSi systems sold out. In either case, the rhythm microgame collection from the WarioWare team will be available in North America on April 5, exactly as "predicted" by retailers, and is compatible with all DS hardware models.Nintendo is seemingly putting a lot of confidence in a very strange game by positioning it as the DSi's "launch title." This is an especially surprising move considering that Nintendo never released the Game Boy Advance predecessor, Rhythm Tengoku, in North America, despite its hit status in Japan.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
