Wii Fanboy Review: Ultimate Shooting Collection

A compilation of shooters on the Wii may seem a bit unnecessary or even redundant. The Wii already has what could be dubbed the "Ultimate Shooting Collection" -- though not on a single disc. The Virtual Console is loaded with a surfeit of shooters, including many of the best games in the genre's history. The Ultimate Shooting Collection, in comparison, is composed of just three games, some or all of which you may never even heard of. But just like there usually is an argument for a new game over an old one you've played, there is content of interest here that doesn't exist in the downloadable space. The games in Ultimate Shooting Collection are a great showcase for the evolution of the shooter genre, which may seem stagnant or even dead, in the modern age. Even with the piles upon piles of existing shooters, there aren't any like these on the Virtual Console.

Mario Kart Source: made by fans, for fans

If you're a fan of PC games, then of course you've heard of the Source engine. It powers Half-Life 2, which is the bee's knees. Well, an ambitious bunch has decided to use the Source engine to code a new Mario Kart racing game, Mario Kart Source. The best part about this project is that the team is looking at all of the previous games in the series and is attempting to take just the best bits for their new game. Our verdict? Awesome.Sadly, Nintendo won't likely be as excited to hear about the project, so we're sure they'll step in at some point or another and intervene. Wiimote weights, because you're a flabby mess of a gamer

At least, that's the thinking we imagine went on in the meeting when the concept of the riiflex was developed. And they surely don't get in the way of the buttons, as these 2- and 5-pound attachments promise "access to all Wii Remote functions." Well then, sign us up! While we're cutting down enemies in Santa Destroy, we can get totally ripped. Then there's the danger of adding pounds to your Wiimote. You know how there's always that person that gets a little too into bowling in Wii Sports? With this they're likely to throw a Wiimote through your TV, past the wall, and right into the neighbor's nice new car. Don't say we didn't warn you.[Via Engadget]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Another Trailer R

Another Trailer R

Here's another look at Another Code R, courtesy of the official Japanese site. This is the lengthiest clip we've watched yet, and is a useful summary of everything we've seen to date: the point-and-click mechanics, the puzzles, the cut-scenes (that also utilize the rest of the game's cel-shaded style), and heroine Ashley doing her hilarious miming thing. We could contentedly watch this game all day (and probably will when we finally acquire a copy, and are forced to stare at the screen for hours, frustrated by our lack of puzzle-solving smarts), but you know what would be even nicer? A localized version. Get on it already, Nintendo!

Ubisoft planning mysterious new music game

Do we really need more music game peripherals cluttering up our homes? Well, no, obviously not, but that could be a very real danger we have to face in the not-too-distant future, because Ubisoft is planning some sort of new music game for the Wii and other platforms. superannuation found this job listing posted at Gamasutra, asking for a lead designer on an "exciting new cross-platform music-based game."We've no idea what Ubi is plotting, but the company has plainly grown envious of the money pie being scarfed down by fellow powerhouse publishers EA and Activision, and intends to do something about it. There's the possibility that this might not even involve plastic instruments, but if it does ... well, isn't it time your folks checked into their retirement home? Isn't that for the best?[Via Joystiq]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Monster Hunter 3: New monsters to hunt, new places to hunt them

We've been looking at screens of the ported Monster Hunter G lately, so to return to Monster Hunter 3, which is already one of the best-looking Wii games, is dramatic. Capcom's use of all kinds of crazy lighting in the sequel is effective, giving the action RPG a "next gen" feel. Really, they could make the whole thing in the ugly old Monster Hunter G engine and still sell millions of copies. The latest screens introduce a weird locale that appears to be somehow part desert and part swamp, full of nests of giant, monstrous insects, and home to this guy. This dragon, called "Boruboros" (probably "Volvolos" or something in English) comes out of a big mud pit and attacks with his giant, hard head.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
