Monster Hunter 3: New monsters to hunt, new places to hunt them

We've been looking at screens of the ported Monster Hunter G lately, so to return to Monster Hunter 3, which is already one of the best-looking Wii games, is dramatic. Capcom's use of all kinds of crazy lighting in the sequel is effective, giving the action RPG a "next gen" feel. Really, they could make the whole thing in the ugly old Monster Hunter G engine and still sell millions of copies. The latest screens introduce a weird locale that appears to be somehow part desert and part swamp, full of nests of giant, monstrous insects, and home to this guy. This dragon, called "Boruboros" (probably "Volvolos" or something in English) comes out of a big mud pit and attacks with his giant, hard head.

Guillemot accidentally confirms Red Steel 2

Ubisoft has stopped short of saying HEY GUYS RED STEEL 2 IS TOTALLY COMING, but we can be reasonably certain it's on the way.Previously, the game's producer has talked openly about the sequel to Ubisoft's Wii launch slash-a-thon, and now it seems Ubi CEO Yves Guillemots has really given the game away, with a careless slip of Gallic tongue.Speaking at a conference call earlier today, Guillemots announced that "We have lots of products coming for the Wii next [fiscal] year. We have Red Steel --," before halting himself mid-sentence and apologizing. Whoops! Call us wild rumor-mongers if you like, but it's safe to assume that the next word out of Guillemot's mouth would have been "2."Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Onechanbara: the sitcom

Onechanbara: the sitcom

Okay, we aren't sure who D3 is after with these live-action Onechanbara ads. They're corny, but at the same time approach an uncomfortable level of (implied) lasciviousness. Well, we say we aren't sure, but we have a pretty good idea. We've seen enough Spike TV to know how companies think they should advertise to dudes. It's kind of a good thing for them we're already interested in Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers. The newest trailer seems to violate the rules of the world set up in the previous trailers. In other ads, zombies live normal lives and act pretty much like people, but humans hate them anyway. In this trailer ... the humans don't really seem to hate him. And that's the most analysis anyone will ever apply to these ads! Enjoy after the break. We're glad to see D3 getting so much mileage out of that one fake arm, by the way.

Wii on track to beat PS2, PS3 selling like GameCube

The fine folks at Venture Beat have been pouring over NPD data and have discovered one universal truth: Nintendo has sold a lot of video game consoles. Crazy, huh? We thought the same thing.A closer dissection of the numbers shows the Wii is on pace to topple the PS2, as the Wii has outsold the PS2's comparable initial sales by 10 percent in its first 26 months of availability. In layman's terms, that means that the PS2's first 26 months on store shelves saw it unloading 15.9 million units in the U.S., whereas the Wii has sold 17.5 million here. If these sales continue, the Wii could sell 55 million consoles in America by 2014 and 154 million units worldwide. When you count up the money, that's like 257 hojillion dollars. On the reverse side, the PS3 is performing much like Nintendo's last console did, the GameCube. The PS3 has sold 6.79 million units in the U.S. in its first 26 months, which is a hair more than the 6.75 million GameCubes that were unloaded on consumers. Of course, Nintendo finished in third last generation with that console, which made them rethink their approach and, inevitably, succeed this generation.

Real Virtual Skater: kickflip and nollie with the Wiimote

What you see in the video above is Real Virtual Skater, a hack which utilizes the Wiimote's guts in a small box attached to the bottom of a skateboard. As you can imagine, it lets you play as if you're actually skateboarding. The game the tech is being demonstrated on is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Our only concern is if anyone actually tried doing this in their living room, they'd break a few lamps. And a couple of tables. And the television.Head past the break for the video.[Via Engadget]
Enjoy this kind of thing? Then you'll definitely get a kick out of our Revolutionary feature, where the extremely talented Mike Sylvester tinkers around with all kinds of things. Aside from making his own homemade Balance Board, he helped us train with the Wii Wheel and also showed us what is really crappy about our favorite console.

EA officially announces Spore Hero

Spore's arrival on the Wii has been stretched out over such a protracted period of time it would make evolution itself blush. Will Wright first confirmed the project way, way back in October 2007; optimistically, we placed the game in a list of titles to look out for in 2008.Nevertheless, let's say it again: Spore is coming to Wii. Yay! This time, to make things feel extra official and important, EA made the announcement, revealing that Spore Hero, a game built from the ground up for the Wii, would focus on "creativity and evolution." And that's really all we know for now, aside from the fact that the game will release this fall.Considering it's taken EA the best part of fifteen months to announce the thing, and given the first game's reputation, we wouldn't be amazed to see some slippage. One to watch out for in our "Games for 2010" list, perhaps.[Via Joystiq]
