New Play Video: Pikmin

We're way into the New Play Control version of Pikmin. Even eight years after its original release, Pikmin remains one of the fresher and more unusual Nintendo franchise games, and the Wii version only improves on it!In this video, Wii Folder's Josh Thomas (standing in front of the screen like a weatherman) introduces the game in a manner appropriate for people who have no idea what Pikmin is. While that means a lot of explanation of stuff you know, it also means a ton of game footage (worth seeing even with a dude in front of it), and all the new Wii content is highlighted. While you're watching previews of Wii remakes on Wii Folder, check out the Klonoa footage!

Wii's winners and losers in Japan

We can't exactly trust the validity of the numbers used to create this list of best-selling games across the three home platforms, since it's just some guy on Geocities doing it (and he claims that he might alter numbers to deter copying) but they're close enough to our expectations for most games. These numbers are purportedly derived from Enterbrain and Famitsu sales data. Kotaku reproduced the top and bottom-selling games on each platform, and we think that's a nice way to organize it.The top ten Wii games are not too surprising, including stuff like Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Brawl, and other big Nintendo franchises. The only third-party game on the list is Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, which, of course, is a Mario game! But the bottom ten is a lot more entertaining, revealing, for example, that poor Opoona sold only 5,000 copies, as did Dewy's Adventure. D3's motivation for putting their Simple games on WiiWare is made clear by the fact that their disc-based releases totally bombed. Though not as badly as Hudson's Puzzle Series Vol. 1 Sudoku, which apparently sold 482 copies total. It's hard to pick interesting tidbits out of the middle of the list (which we won't reproduce after the break in the interest of brevity) but apparently No More Heroes sold just 27,873 copies -- much less than the 84,224 copies of Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 3 that went out!Top Ten

  1. Wii Sports (3.2m)
  2. Wii Fit (2.8m)
  3. Wii Play (2.5m)
  4. Mario Kart Wii (1.9m)
  5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (1.7m)
  6. Mario Party 8 (1.2 m)
  7. Super Mario Galaxy (932,119)
  8. Animal Crossing: City Folk (727,555)
  9. WarioWare: Smooth Moves (605,479)
  10. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (590,265)

Bottom Ten (in descending order)

  1. Happy Dance Collection (5,010)
  2. Dewy's Adventure (5,000)
  3. Opoona (5,000)
  4. Jikkyou Powerful Major League 3 (4,250)
  5. GeGeGe no Kitaro: The Yokai Athletic Tournament (3,000)

Top 5: Resolutions for Nintendo

After being MIA last week, it's nice to be back. I hope you were able to get your fill of inflammatory statements and grammatical errors from another blogger. And most importantly, I'm glad you're back. While I was away with loved ones, I did like many other of my countrymen and did not hold back on food and drink. Though I try to watch what I eat, the lure of freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies and egg nog were a siren's song I could not ignore. And when I make my way to the gym tonight for my semi-daily swim, I know that it will be infested with the dreaded "January Joiners." This is a term which refers to the large influx of people attending the gym in the early part of the year in a futile attempt to fulfill their weight-loss resolutions. Although maneuvering around the larger number of bodies is an inconvenience, I have no ill feelings towards this people. In fact, I wish that they'd stay all year. Sadly, I know better: they'll be gone before February. So if you've made resolutions, try your best to stick with them. Whether fitness-related or not, setting goals is a great way to improve our lives. Write notes on a calendar, set Google alerts to remind you of goals, and keep your eye on the prize. While your resolutions will best be decided by yourself, we can all agree on a few for Nintendo. Here's the Top 5 resolutions that the Big N should set for themselves. Unlike the January Joiners, let's hope these goals aren't abandoned by Valentine's Day. We Ski and Snowboard through lovely scenery

For a cutesy game about cartoony, low-detail characters in vast expanses of snow, Namco Bandai's We Ski series looks a lot better than it needs to. Not that we're complaining! We'd always prefer to enjoy looking at a Wii game whenever possible, and developers don't always enable us to do so.The latest screenshots of We Ski & Snowboard are a bit small, but the nice lighting and detailed mountain backdrops are still clearly visible. We might be crazy (for snowboards!), but we think this one looks better than its predecessor! Again, not like we can make such judgments based on tiny-ish screens. We can safely say it looks nice!

Retail and download releases for the week of January 5th

For all of you fishing nuts out there, Hudson's Fishing Master World Tour lands on retail shelves this week. On top of that, we've got one new Virtual Console title, as well as a new WiiWare game. So, head past the break and see all of the new gaming content available to Wii owners this week in North America.

Rumor: Lego ... Rock Band?

Lots of people have been speculating that the next entry in the Lego games franchise, to follow up Batman and Indiana Jones, would be something to tie in with the release of the next Harry Potter film. However, gaming site videogaming247 claims a source let slip to them that, instead, the next Lego game by developer Travellers Tales would be Lego Rock Band. Let the chorus of "what???" begin. While this one is a tough rumor to swallow, for reasons of rights, viability, and silliness -- and we're always mistrustful of these anonymous sources, no matter who they're talking to -- Lego Rock Band would be both hilarious and completely awesome, so we're going to cross a few fingers.

Ooh, shiny: Platinum Games unveils new logo

2009 promises to be a busy year for Platinum Games, home of Clover alumni and all-round awesomeness. MadWorld will be curb-stomping our happy, grateful faces into pulpy mush in March, Infinite Space will grace our DSes, and the company is also developing some game for the others.

Faced with such an intimidating stack of deadlines, the company took drastic action, and designed a new logo. Replacing the old design is what looks like a slightly shorter, plumper version of the PlayStation "P," alongside ... a star? A shuriken? Something great, anyway. Something which will fill the the worker ants with pride and increase output by 493% this calendar year. Oh, and it's all lovingly rendered in "Platinum Silver," don'cha know.

Company President / CEO Tatsuya Minami will be discussing the deeper meaning behind the new logo later. There's always a deeper meaning behind these things.

Drumming to Super Mario Bros. 3

He's back at it again. Following up his incredible display centered around Super Mario Bros. 2, drummer extraordinaire Andrea Vadrucci has put together another video of himself. This time, he's banging out some key tunes in Super Mario Bros. 3. As one would expect, his execution is near flawless and, well, it's just a great video to watch. Check it out already.[Via Kotaku]

Rock Band Wii DLC coming 'as early in 2009 as possible'

For the few of you out there still waiting to sink your teeth into Rock Band DLC, Harmonix has announced the company is getting closer to flicking the switch that will turn on the tidal wave of DLC awaiting Wii gamers. As you all know, we're supposedly getting all of the DLC from the first game, as well as the second (and a bunch of free tracks, to boot). If you're keeping score at home, that's a lot. Right now, Harmonix is working on getting the 20 free tracks available, as well as 30 from the Rock Band DLC catalogue, to start.Of course, a lot of you still feel cheated by Harmonix and have decided to go with Guitar Hero: World Tour instead, as you've made known time and time again. It's perfectly understandable. We probably would've done the same thing if we had a lot of money to blow on plastic instruments. The problem is that when you work for cruel masters like we do, you're only paid in vicious beatings.

Deals for Guitar Heroes of all levels

If you're one of the eight individuals on the planet yet to acquire Guitar Hero Something, roughly now would be a good time to start. In a heartwarming display of post-festive cheer bid to rid itself of excess stock, the troubled Circuit City is offering savings on two Guitar Hero game/guitar bundles: Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, both for $47.99.

Alternatively, if you're a grizzled, orange-button-happy Guitar Hero veteran whose home and life is being gradually consumed by plastic peripherals, Amazon is willing to sell you Guitar Hero World Tour for $34.99 -- sans another instrument.
