Miyamoto: 'Have confidence' in Nintendo's ability to develop for the Vitality Sensor

Since its out-of-nowhere introduction at E3, the biometric-reading Wii Vitality Sensor has inspired some rage, some jokes, and a lot of confusion, but very little genuine interest from gamers online. The Mercury News asked Shigeru Miyamoto to respond to the widespread skepticism about the peripheral.

"Ideally we would have been able to talk about this in terms of the software implementation rather than just the sensor itself," Miyamoto said. "I don't have any indication for you (of what we have in the works) other than to say that we have lots of very creative ideas."

Even though he still has no specific software ideas to discuss, Miyamoto assured readers that Nintendo would do something interesting. "We understand the challenge before us, and we have met these challenges in the past. We just ask that people have confidence in us."

Miyamoto also offered his feelings on digital distribution: "Personally, I'm one of those guys who, even if I have all the songs from iTunes, I want the CD as well. It's something that makes me - I feel more reassured with that physical media." He believes that a combination of digital and physical media will continue into the future.

VC in Brief: Tecmo Bowl (Arcade)

Tecmo Bowl (Arcade, 1 - 4 players, 600 Wii Points)We say: Beats the NES game with co-op and better graphicsAfter two weeks of forced hiatus, Nintendo has finally seen fit to restore VC in Brief. This week's Virtual Console release is the Arcade version of Tecmo Bowl. It bests its NES counterpart in almost every way, save for its two-team roster, of course. Pay witness to the spectacle above and watch as men attain glory on a 360 foot by 160 foot field.
Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Joystiq Scribblenauts Challenge: Your Solutions! [update]

Wow, this was a tough one, and we don't just mean sorting through the hundreds of entries we received. Seriously, if we'd made a video containing all the good suggestions, this video would have been tens of hours long; you guys and gals really outdid yourself. But here we present just a sampling of your solutions, hoping that they give at least a flavor of the Scribblenauts experience and help to tide you over until you can try it for yourself next month. Thanks again for your help![Update: Sorry guys, but we've been asked by Warner Bros. PR people to remove the video because it wasn't approved by the company. Yeah, we would have expected a video that lavished praise on our game to be approved too, but hey, what do we know?]

3-in-1 Wii controller adapter now a 2-in-1, coming out in September

You may have noticed that the Komodo Retro Adapter, which connects NES, SNES, and N64 controllers to the Wii for use in Virtual Console games, didn't come out in June as planned. We realized that authentic NES Max control was missing from our Wii-playing lives, and so we checked in with distributor Innex to find out the status of the product.Innex informed us that the device has been delayed until September, due to "configuration issues" with the N64 controller port. Also, as a result of that same problem, the device will only have NES and SNES ports. Innex tells us that it is still working on the N64 compatibility. We wonder if the updated 2-in-1 device will still be shaped like a tiny Nintendo 64.Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Week on the Nintendo Channel: Fossil Fighters

We're not hard to please here at Joystiq. When we heard about Fossil Fighters, a game that lets you play as Colonel Sanders' brother (only your dinos fight for sport, making them infinitely better), we turned an ear skyward. It's just a cool concept and, while the jury's still out on the game (releases next week), we thought this extended look at the title was worth highlighting on This Week on the Nintendo Channel. After you've checked out the three minute-plus video above, be sure to head past the break for the rest of this week's content.

Wii Guitar Hero 5 doesn't use in-game Friend Codes

And we thought the announcement of a returning feature from a previous game was exciting. In an interview with IGN, Vicarious Visions' Karthik Bala revealed that the Wii version of Guitar Hero 5 won't bother you for Friend Codes when you try to play online."For GH5, we've implemented support for your global Wii Friend Codes," Bala told IGN. "If you've got friends in your Wii address book, they'll automatically be added to your friends list in game, so you can easily connect up with them in online multiplayer games."GH5 on Wii is now at "full feature parity" with the other versions, Bala said. It includes eight-player online play (no longer limited to two Wii consoles), and also adds a couple of Wii-exclusive features like a "Roadie Battle" mode and DS control of aspects of the (updated) Mii Freestyle.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rage of the Gladiator rages on WiiWare

Helix developer Ghostfire Games has revealed its next WiiWare project: a first-person fighting game called Rage of the Gladiator -- a title that gets us all primed for violence just by typing it. RAAAAAAAGE.The game takes place in a city called Avalance, in which some kind of political betrayal has forced the prince into arena combat, where he must face a bunch of mythical creatures, like minotaurs, dragons, and demons. The prince is armed with a warhammer and a shield, along with some rather intimidating magical skills that manifest as "finishing moves" -- for example, one finisher lets the prince "darken the skies with a solar eclipse, sending a beam of light to fry your enemy."First-person fighting is a rarity, as is a WiiWare game with 3D visuals this nice. Rage of the Gladiators is due out later this year. Check out a trailer after the break.

Cave Story developer Nicalis reveals 'Project Q'

The latest project from Cave Story WiiWare developer Nicalis -- after, of course, Cave Story, Night Game and La-Mulana -- is a new platformer from Knytt and Night Game creator Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren, currently called Project Q. You can see some early footage of the title at IGN.Q appears to have a lot in common with the Knytt games -- the tiny protagonist exploring beautiful landscapes, dealing with environmental puzzles. It follows a young woman traversing various planets in search of pieces of a transporter, "armed" only with a camera, "to document information and capture the environments."According to Nicalis's Tyrone Rodriguez, the developer has "WiiWare in mind." However, "In truth," he told IGN, "it could be WiiWare, Wii disc or even PSN, XBLA and PC."[Via Offworld]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This week is a special one for Nintendo fans. Not only do we finally see an end to the Virtual Console drought, but we also get fighting robots and a new Art Style game. Oh, and then there's Sexy Poker, Gameloft's odd strip poker game for WiiWare. We guess the company never heard of Google image search?
