EA reveals UK lovefest with FIFA 10 cover athletes

We've been known to dabble in a FIFA game from time to time, though cover athletes aren't really our forte, if you will. Rather than address our ignorance dead-on, we'll simply tell you that Frank Lampard of Chelsea, Theo Walcott of Arsenal and Wayne Rooney of Manchester United are donning the cover of this year's footballer. Believe it or not, the game will feature more than just players from English teams. (Yes, we're just as shocked as you by that possibility.) The game is set to land in the UK on October 2, and Amazon and GameStop are putting the game's US release on October 20th.

Sega clarifies first-week sales numbers for The Conduit

In announcing its Q1 2010 earnings last week, Sega also presented a sales figure of 150,000 units for The Conduit during its first week on sale (June 23 through June 30). Just a little more than a week earlier, figures released by NPD put sales of the game for June 23 through July 4 at just 72,000 copies -- not a small discrepancy by any means. We contacted Sega to find out which report was the most accurate. Turns out they both were.Sega's 150k figure, the publisher told us, was based on copies of the game shipped to retailers during that first week. Although a rep explained that this figure was "global," the only part of the globe the game was available in before July 10 (the UK launch) was North America. Those 72,000 units reported by NPD, then? Those were how many of the 150,000 copies shipped were sold-through to consumers (a.k.a. actually sold), according to Sega. While this certainly makes the game's first week less impressive, we'll need to see how The Conduit did for all of July before delivering a fair verdict. We'll have those numbers as soon as the next NPD report hits.Permalink | Email this | Comments

DSi approaching 7 million units in global sales

Guys, this DSi thing is a pretty big deal. As headlines to posts you're reading right now would have you believe, the handheld is teetering on seven million units sold globally, GI.biz points out. It's no wonder, considering some of the milestones it's reached so early in its life span:

  • 435,000 units were sold during the first week of release in the US
  • During DSi's first weekend on sale in the UK, 92,000 units were sold
  • Japan recently sold its three millionth DSi

It's anyone's guess as to when Nintendo will crack the seven million figure (currently it's at 6.68 million), though we're sure the remainder of August is more than ample time to accomplish the feat.[Via Go Nintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hudson sheds light on new Wii platformer, Shadow Tower

An article in the latest Famitsu magazine, summarized by 1UP, reveals a new Wii game from Hudson Soft. Shadow Tower doesn't seem to have anything to do with the From Software PlayStation RPG of the same name, instead appearing to be a platformer in which players control the shadow of an otherwise invisible boy.As he travels through an abandoned landscape and climbs up the tower featured in the name, the silhouetted character actually travels on the shadows of platforms and structures, interacting with shadow objects to trigger movement in their real counterparts. He is joined by a butterfly who can reach objects he can't -- 1UP offers the example of a light source that the butterfly changes to alter the shape of the shadow landscape and make a chasm navigable.Pretty much everyone who sees this mentions the ICO-esque look, and we think that's an apt comparison. Given that we like the look of Team ICO games, and we like original platformers, we're going to be following this one.[Image via Nintendo Everything]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Phantasy Star Zero screens -- now with English text

It's been a long time since we've seen Phantasy Star Zero screenshots. In fact, it's been a long time since we've heard anything about the DS RPG, which is why these English screens (the first we've seen) are such a great comfort to us. Look, Sega's working on the game, probably! As demonstrated in the screen seen here, the chat macro system from Phantasy Star Online returns in this game, joined by the new Pictochat-style stylus chat. Technically, these two systems mean that you can chat with people who don't know your language. And now, thanks to this English release coming this fall (we hope), you'll actually be able to know what the game is saying as well.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wii Sports Resort sells over 500K in US

Even Miss Cleo could've predicted this one. Nintendo's follow-up to console pack-in Wii Sports has done exceedingly well, as Nintendo has revealed Wii Sports Resort has managed to sell over 500,000 copies in the US since its July 26 release. Combined with the game's strong sales in the UK, it's safe to say Nintendo has a bona fide hit on its hands. Waitaminute, did we just type that? A Nintendo game managed to make money? We must be stuck in the Twilight Zone again.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo's DS Classroom now DSi-only

Using the DS as an educational tool is nothing new in Japan. It's been a tour guide, an English teacher and even a boozing instructor. Lately the focus has been on DS Classroom, a program from Nintendo and Sharp System Products announced back in June that aims to let Japanese teachers dish out lessons and the like to students' DSes. Initially, it was planned to work with the original DS, the Lite and DSi, but, according to Andriasang, that's no longer the case. The new educational aid will only work with the DSi now, as Nintendo has announced it's doing away with support for the older Nintendo handhelds. We would be worried for the students over there that don't have a DSi, but, then again, we're pretty sure those kids are few and far between.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band: Metal Track Pack to feature Motorhead, Nazareth, more

A recent addition to the ESRB ratings list reveals an upcoming "Metal" track pack for Rock Band for PS2, PS3, Wii and 360. The ESRB rated the expansion with a "Teen" rating due to the upcoming pack's inclusion of songs with expletives "as well as allusions to violence." It's a good thing the game doesn't make detailed references to violence!Example lyrics given by the ESRB reveal two of the track pack's songs: "D.O.A." by Haunted and "Transmaniacon MC" by Blue Oyster Cult, a brand new addition to the Rock Band franchise. A leaked achievement list also reveals "Killed by Death" by Motorhead, "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth, and "Master of the Universe" by Hawkwind as new songs exclusive to the pack. Considering the last Rock Band track pack debuted 13 new songs unavailable as DLC, we're confident that this new addition will do the same.Rock Band: Metal Track Pack hasn't been announced yet, but considering the reliability of the ESRB's ratings, we expect EA and MTV Games to announce the full track list, along with the track pack itself, within the next few weeks.[Thanks, Justin R.!]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

NyxQuest takes to American skies next Monday

click to enlargeNyxQuest, the WiiWare sidescroller once known as Icarian: Kindred Spirits, will be out next Monday, August 10, according to a release from developer Over the Top Games, at a cost of 1,000 Wii Points. We've actually had prior notice about at least one of each week's WiiWare releases for a few weeks in a row -- we knew beforehand about Overturn, My Life as a Darklord, Tales of Monkey Island, and Bit.Trip: Core. We like this -- being able to tell you all about game releases before they happen, so you can then plan your purchases. What a novel idea!
