Nintendo sends us odd Fossil Fighters package

No time for archaeology, Dr. Jones
Nintendo has been known to pull off odd PR stunts, whether it's filling Times Square with truckloads of sand or, in this case, sending out gigantic pieces of plaster to promote Fossil Fighters, We guess Nintendo has no problem throwing around some of its cash. Just, uh, maybe send us a trash bag next time so we have somewhere to put all of this mess, 'kay?

European Nintendo downloads: Shinobi takes revenge on bonsai

Today, we're jealous of European gamers, for one reason: The Revenge of Shinobi. The totally awesome Shinobi sequel isn't on the Virtual Console in North America, and it isn't on the Sega Genesis Collection or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. presumably due to the appearance of copyrighted characters (some of which were included without permission the first time!). We could totally be playing it now if we were in Europe (or Australia). Hopefully this release means that Sega is clear to release it in North America as well. We'd be jealous of Bonsai Barber, which is surprisingly great, but we already have it! And we don't currently need maps of European cities, so the City Transport Map DSiWare games can wait as well.

  • Bonsai Barber (WiiWare, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)
  • The Revenge of Shinobi (Mega Drive, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
  • City Transport Map Vol. 1 & 2 (DSiWare, 500 points each)

Japan's SaGa 2 Collector's Edition box art brings us back to our youth

Square Enix's upcoming Nintendo DS-exclusive SaGa 2 Hihou Densetsu: Goddess of Destiny (Final Fantasy Legend 2) is getting the collector's edition treatment, with box art that brings us back to our childhood days. While the classic Master System-style packaging may seem an odd choice for a DS release, it's exactly the kind of old school flair needed for a remake. The 'Square Enix e-Store only' collector's pack -- priced at ¥12,076 ($126 US) -- also includes the game's original soundtrack, a 20th Anniversary SaGa Chronicle book, a mascot tchotchke and two postcards. Avid collectors can import the game, enjoy the soundtrack and let their friends know what they are missing via snail mail. That's what we call a functional collector's edition.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dead Space: Extraction trailer takes a look at the story

In this latest trailer for Visceral Games' Dead Space: Extraction, we're given our first glimpse at the initial outbreak of the infection and how it spread across the colony. Shortly after, our team of protagonists find themselves commandeering a shuttle and setting a course for the USG Ishimura. It's quite a content-heavy look at the game, so check it out if you want to learn more about what's going on or, like us, just feel like watching Necromorphs meet the business end of a Plasma Cutter.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Starbreeze's 'Enclave' being ported to Wii

Remember Enclave? It's back ... in Wii form! Oh, you don't remember Enclave? It was a 3D fantasy action game for the Xbox and PC, developed by Starbreeze Studios immediately prior to its breakout hit The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.According to Eurogamer, some progress was made years ago on a GameCube port of the game, which the site speculates is the basis for this Wii version. However, Starbreeze isn't working on the Wii game -- instead, a German developer called Village1 Entertainment is handling the port. Village1 expects to release the game in "early 2010," though without a publisher, it has basically no way of knowing when the release date will be.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rock Band Weekly: Gorillaz, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Who

Oh my, too many good tracks in next week's Rock Band Weekly to play off of for the basis of this post. Do we ask about breaking off a piece of our heart because of the Janis Joplin track, or do we go ask Alice when she's 10 feet tall? Ask her what? Exactly! A perfect psychedelic question. Now, feed your head by checking out the full list of tracks for all of the various Rock Band games after the break -- oh yeah, there's also the Gorillaz next week.

Wii Sports Resort puts MotionPlus in over 600,000 European homes

We knew that Wii Sports Resort was selling well in Europe. Today, Nintendo told GamesIndustry.biz just how well: over 600,000 copies in its two weeks of release, even more than have sold in North America. That's not only good news for the game, but also for the prospects for future MotionPlus use -- the more the game sells, the more of the Wii audience has the device, and the more likely developers are to support it. Who knew that a sequel to a ridiculously popular game could also be popular? Somebody should tell all the struggling publishers like EA and Activision about this. Tales of Monkey Island continues on August 20

Telltale has announced that the next chapter of Tales of Monkey Island, Siege of Spinner Cay, will be out on PC on August 20. The developer wasn't as precise with the details of the WiiWare release, but, according to the announcement, it will be "timed close to the PC release." This is, perhaps, what we like best about Telltale's episodic approach -- it gives us the satisfaction of buying a new adventure game every month or so, even though we're actually only buying another part of the same adventure game. After an eight-year wait for a new Monkey Island, we're enjoying the novelty of purchasing new games in the series almost as much as we're enjoying playing them. Should you be stuck in the first game, and in need of some help to get you ready for the second, Telltale posted a walkthrough for Launch of the Screaming Narwhal. Permalink | Email this | Comments

There are now 3.5 million Dragon Quest IX cartridges

Welcome to your weekly Dragon Quest IX sales update! We don't do this for most games, but, well, most games don't sell over two million copies in the first week. The relevant part of Square Enix's latest statement about the RPG's success is actually about shipments rather than sales: the company announced that as of yesterday, it had shipped out 3.5 million copies. Sales are currently at 3.39 million, so we're confident that the 3.5 million shipped copies will be out of stores soon enough, and within a couple of weeks we'll hear about the number hitting 4 million. Still no announcements about a release outside of Japan, however, presumably because ... actually, we have no idea why Square Enix isn't using this ridiculous popularity to promote an international release.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Looks like DSi firmware 1.4 is defeated already

The site for the R4i DSi flash cart posted a video (see it after the break) demonstrating what appears to be the R4i running on a DSi system with the 1.4 firmware. You know, the firmware that was released not even a week ago, and removed flash cart compatibility? Yeah, that one. The video demonstrates a retail game ROM, which is not particularly awesome, but does serve as evidence of flash cart compatibility. The site currently doesn't mention whether this is accomplished through an R4i firmware update or through new hardware. We'll find out more as more flash carts pick up on whatever technique is in use.If 1.4 has truly been defeated, homebrew users will be able to upload photos to Facebook and play Magnetic Shaving Derby! Magical. [YouTube video via GBATemp]
