Professor Layton and the REAL Diabolical Box

Click image to help us solve the mystery
Nintendo has been on a roll with its games shipments lately, as Joystiq HQ just received the package you see above containing Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box and ... a real Diabolical Box. We quickly threw the small, wooden thing into a corner and made for the Professor Layton, but, in a move most cruel, Nintendo shipped us an empty game case. It was then we realized that the game was located in a wooden prison, so we were forced to solve a puzzle before we could play this game about solving puzzles.

Nielsen: 360 has most 'active users' in 2009, Wii has fewest

We imagine those six multicolored lines you see above are going to cause quite a stir among the various fanboy contingencies -- they represent the percentage of "active users" on different consoles in the first half of 2009, according to survey data compiled by Nielsen. As you can see, the Xbox 360 dominated the charts, while the ubiquitously successful Wii came in dead last by a huge margin, ranking below the PS2, original Xbox and GameCube. Our initial reaction to this data was that Nielsen is high on pot, but we can kinda understand what caused the Wii's disappointing placement on the list -- the chart is tracking the percent of console owners who use their gaming hardware on a regular basis. Everyone and their dog owns a Wii by this point, but very few actually play them consistently, according to Nielsen's findings. Meanwhile, there's only a handful of GameCubes out there that haven't been converted into lunchboxes, and their owners apparently use them a bit more frequently. If you're looking for a more straightforward breakdown of console usage, Nielsen also figured the overall usage totals for each console. That chart's posted after the jump. (You'll find it slightly above the deluge of inflammatory comments.)[Via IndustryGamers]

Buy Guitar Hero 5, get Guitar Hero: Van Halen for free

Even if you're experiencing some music game overload, you have to take notice of something like this: Those who buy Guitar Hero 5 during the month of September will be able to send away for a free copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen, which will be sent to them before it arrives in stores. OK, it's not quite enough to cure our Beatlemania, but damn it if it doesn't make picking up GH5 considerably more appealing. [Update: This offer is good only in the USA.]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Japanese Nintendo downloads: Nothing this week, arcade classics next week

This week, there are no updates on the Japanese Wii Shop, due to the Obon holiday. Now we know why last week's update was so massive -- it more than compensated for a week off! The Virtual Console, at least, will return next week with four new games. No announcement has been made for WiiWare yet, but we thought we'd share the VC releases. It's going to be a good week for arcade games! Knuckle Heads, a silly-looking post-Street Fighter II fighting game from Namco, will be available, along with the arcade versions of Bomb Jack and Solomon's Key, two (unfortunately priced) total classics from Tecmo.

Nintendo patents inflatable cushion -- you know, for horseback riding

Siliconera discovered a European patent filed by Nintendo for ... that thing. It's an "inflatable air cushion or other type seat" with a pocket for the Wii Remote. It's for simulating horseback riding, or, as the patent description notes, to simulate the riding of other animals, real or imagined, or even vehicles. A Nunchuk (or another Wii Remote) is used as the reins of the beast, and the Wii Remote in the pocket detects the player's movement on the seat, which can be used either for balance or, in one example, to indicate the gait of the horse: "gentle forward/backward motion = walking, fast forward/backward rocking motion = gallop."While we don't feel any particular pull to play a game by bouncing on a cushion, we really want this controller idea to come to fruition -- because we know that every time we get to write about the Nintendo Bouncy Seat is going to be like Christmas morning. Seriously, Nintendo, thank you.

ESRB rates 'Puzzle League Express' for DSi

We sometimes wonder just how upset publishers get when the ESRB spills their secrets. Case in point: the ratings organization has listed (and rated!) Puzzle League Express on its site as a Nintendo DSi title. (It's classified "Everyone," FYI.)Given that it's a DSi title with "Express" in its name, the logical conclusion (what other kind could you use when talking about a puzzle game?) is that this is an upcoming DSiWare take on the classic Nintendo puzzler last seen on DS as Planet Puzzle League. After all, we've already gotten Dr. Mario Express and Brain Age Express. Of course, Nintendo could always be releasing a highly illogical Puzzle League themed train sim, but we doubt it.[Via GoNintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Week on the Nintendo Channel: Rocking on Rocks

It would be a kind of blah week on the Nintendo Channel, due to nothing but old demos and generally unexciting videos -- if not for the inclusion of a gameplay trailer for today's most extreme release, Rock 'N Roll Climber. There is no way to feel anything less than amped about a game that combines the dangerously awesome sport of rock climbing with the rebellious, implied rocking of air guitar. After the break, you can see the full list. Spoiler alert: none of the demos involve rocking or rock climbing.

Revenge of Shinobi's Spider-Man cleverly disguised

We were delighted to hear that The Revenge of Shinobi would be coming out on the Virtual Console in Europe, though we were very curious about how Sega would get around the inclusion of Spider-Man, for whom the company once had Marvel's permission. As Nintendo Life reveals, Sega solved the copyright issue the way many of us solve chili issues: with a thick coat of Pepto-Bismol. The Spider-Man boss is now solid pink! Other pop-culture-based bosses had already been altered in previous cartridge releases to be a bit more legally distinct -- for example, Batman became more of a bat monster.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
