Famitsu hands Monster Hunter 3 a perfect 40

It's not impossible to earn a perfect score from Famitsu, you know. The latest to earn top marks is Capcom's Monster Hunter 3 (based on translation over at NeoGAF), which comes as little surprise considering everyone and their grandmother loves the franchise in Japan. The true question is: Will it receive such critical acclaim when it hits the States and Europe in early 2010?[Thanks, Victor]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tony Hawk Ride dated, priced, limited edition'd in UK

Activision has made the first official announcement regarding the price of Tony Hawk Ride. In the UK, a set containing the game and board will cost £99.99 ($169) upon its November 20 release. The only information we have for a North American price to compare is the $120 at which GameStop currently lists the game. Apparently, the game is called Tony Hawk Ride because you'll need to start riding in friends' cars after you sell your own for peripheral money.UK retailer GAME will offer an exclusive limited edition of Ride (Xbox 360/PS3/Wii), featuring the red-and-black hawk artwork seen above, for the same price. It also has the game's logo on it so you don't confuse it with a real skateboard. That would be embarrassing.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rage of the Gladiator's control scheme revealed

In our initial post about Rage of the Gladiator, a Ghostfire Games staffer left a comment stating that the control scheme for the game wouldn't rely on motions, with the developer opting instead for a scheme in which you "hold the Wii-remote sideways (like Punch-Out!!)."After some exhaustive research (we emailed Ghostfire), we've got the details of the Rage of the Gladiators control scheme. Wondering just how you're going to punch a minotaur? Wonder no longer.Attacks are mapped to the Wiimote's 1, 2, and A buttons. 1 swings left, 2 swings right -- holding down on the D-pad and pressing either button results in a kick. The A button is used for the shield, both to block and to perform a "shield bash" on a stunned enemy, which starts combos. Combos take the form of quick-timer events, "inspired by games such as God of War," Ghostfire's Scott Merriam explained. The "equipped" combo is selected beforehand with the minus button.Merriam told us that the controls were designed such that the left-hand item, the shield, was controlled on the left side of the Wiimote, and the weapon controls were mapped to the right.

The Next to Fall from Fall 09: Our Predictions

As we breathlessly await to see which of our hopes and dreams will be crushed by the next game being pushed from this fall into Q1 of 2010, we've decided to pass the time with an office pool of sorts, each of us picking one game that we think will be the next to get bumped. Now, you may not want to read too much into these, as we've used methods ranging from sophisticated industry telemetry to completely pulling it out of our asses to make our picks. If there's one you think we missed, let us know in the comments, and if we get enough good ones we might collect those in a separate post. Also, true story: During the creation of this feature yesterday, at least two guys had to make new pics after StarCraft II got bumped. Fact.Ready? Let's get started.

No Guitar Hero: Van Halen for Europe this year

We bring you sad tidings of yet another game's delay into 2010 -- but two elements of this particular delay may soothe your frayed nerves. First, the title in question will only be delayed in Europe, where a good number of you do not live. Second, the delayed title is Guitar Hero: Van Halen, which a good number of you apparently could not care less about.Activision recently told Eurogamer that the PAL version of the "Jump"-infused rhythm title would not hit store shelves later this year. The game has since undergone a release date bump to "TBD 2010" -- not the "Q1 2010" window we've become so accustomed to seeing this year's titles pushed to. The publisher didn't explain the reason for the delay, but we're pretty certain it didn't want Van Halen competing with the other 58 rhythm titles it's releasing this holiday season.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

First look in first-person: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain

click to Firetop Mountain-sizeAspyr kindly sent us some exclusive screens and artwork for Big Blue Bubble's Fighting Fantasy: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, the action-RPG based on the classic roleplaying book. Looking over the screenshots, we get a very mid-'90s PC RPG vibe, which is totally cool with us. Stuff like Etrian Odyssey and The Dark Spire satisfies our nostalgia for even older first-person role-playing, but these high-detail 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds hit a different era of nostalgia. Also in the gallery, two panoramic pieces of environment concept art like the "Dwarven Room" above. The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is expected to reach the Fortress of Retail this holiday season.

Koei reveals first screens of Samurai Warriors 3

Having had our attention turned sharply toward Samurai Warriors 3 by Shigeru Miyamoto, we were eager to learn more about the game itself. And ... well, it looks like any other Warriors/Musou game. But it does look pretty nice! There are a couple of incremental gameplay changes in this one, including "Shadow Techniques," special combos which expend energy from a blue gauge at the bottom of the screen. Triggering one of these with a full gauge will unleash an even bigger attack -- like, in new character Kuroda Kanbei's case, a giant blue fist from the sky. By the way, this game will have over 35 characters, including characters from previous Samurai Warrior games, as well as new ones like Kuroda.Check out more screens at GAME Watch.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Finally, Mario Sunshine's FLUDD jet pack a reality

Just because Super Mario Sunshine is the most underwhelming game in the main Mario series (fact, not opinion), doesn't mean we don't want a water-based jet pack for our own. In fact, we'd be happy with a something-based jet pack of any sort ... unless it's a murder-based jet pack, of course.

Jet Levitation is out there using good old American ingenuity (curious, for a Canadian company) to make our dreams come true with the JetLev, a pack limited by a 30-foot range and powered by a jet ski motor. If you'd like to see for yourself, we've got a video after the break.

[Thanks, Benjamin]

We're having a baby to justify this Link costume

You want to watch the paternal instincts of a bunch of guys instantly kick in like their desire for s'mores over an open fire? Then show them this adorable knit baby-sized Link costume. Oh my gawd, who doesn't want a little baby now?! Not only that, but the quiver holds the baby bottle. It's all toooooo cute. We want an office baby now. Craftster.org user UpKnitCreek created this as a baby shower gift ... and we're totally jealous of the recipient. We're currently trying to get in contact with UpKnitCreek to see if we can get the pattern. Not that we'd know what to do with it, but we're sure somebody else does -- and then we want one! We haven't been this impressed with a knitting project since the Guitar Hero scarf.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

OpenChord: The guitar that plays Guitar Hero

The OpenChord V1 is one of those ideas that seems like it's just missing one key component keeping it from greatness. What the company's developed is a real guitar that you can plug into a Wiimote and use to play Guitar Hero. Cool idea, right? Except there's just one tiny problem: Playing the guitar with Guitar Hero sounds like a nightmare. It's the kind of sound that makes you wanna storm into your bedroom and tell your little brother to stop playing with your axe before you punch his face off. No, we have no idea how to go about fixing this (we're not even sure unplugging the guitar would help), but it seems like it might be a deal breaker for some folks. Check it for yourself after the break.
