Buy Metroid Prime Trilogy in the UK, get Metroid free

If you're in the UK and your Metroid Prime Trilogy purchase will be the second time you've bought one of the Prime games, Nintendo has an enticing offer for you. Be one of the first 5,000 to purchase the Wii collection and register it on Club Nintendo, and, provided you've registered Metroid Prime 1, 2, or 3 in the past, you'll get a free Virtual Console download of the NES Metroid game. Sure, if you're a big enough Metroid fan to be buying Trilogy despite already owning the game, it's likely you already have Metroid, either on the NES, the Virtual Console, or as a connection bonus on the GameCube Metroid Prime disc. But it's still wonderful precedent to have Nintendo giving away a Virtual Console game to promote a new release. But why limit it only to the suckers buying one of the games twice? And why only 5,000? A Virtual Console download costs Nintendo nothing.[Image]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Aragorn's Quest bumped to most popular release quarter of all time

A recent Warner Bros. press release has revealed the cuteified Lord of the Rings RPG Aragorn's Quest will follow the example of a number of big-name titles, moving from its inital launch window of fall 2009 into spring 2010. Based on the screenshots we've seen from the game, we're guessing they accidentally used up all the color in the world, and are now scrambling to find new sources of brilliant hues.

We worried that this adorable adventure might get swept away in the burgeoning first quarter of next year, as it's set to face off with some extremely hyped, sometimes jetpack-equipped giants. However, it's filling the somewhat uninhabited niche of "family-friendly co-op RPGs set in a colorful, pint-sized reimagination of a historically bleak and robust fantasy world," so, you know. It might do okay.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Interview: Ghostfire Games' Ed Roman on Rage of the Gladiator

Ghostfire Games' Rage of the Gladiator is a pretty unusual game -- a first-person fighting game against a set of mythical monsters. What makes it even more unusual is that the violent, fully-3D game is being developed for WiiWare -- by a company whose last game was about dancing. We spoke to Ghostfire CEO Ed Roman about Rage of the Gladiator, and learned about its skill trees, concept, and enemies, as well as Ghostfire's commitment to WiiWare and its apparent admiration of Blizzard and World of Warcraft. You can read the full interview after the break, and oggle three exclusive screenshots in our gallery below:

DJ Hero: The Scratch Perverts and DJ Yoda contributing songs, ridiculous names

Activision today announced a number of DJs who will be contributing mash-ups to its upcoming game, DJ Hero. As if to play right into our expectations of a DJ-themed game, M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" has finally made it into the track list (it took so long!) by way of The Scratch Perverts mixing Eric B. and Rakim's "Eric B. is President" with it. Also revealed was DJ Yoda, who will be mashing up two tracks for the game. In case that news wasn't exciting enough for you, we've got six (!!) more gameplay videos of the game, five of which can be found after the break. That brings our grand total of gameplay videos of DJ Hero in the month of August to 13. Clearly, the marketing push leading up to October's tentative release date has begun in earnest. Maybe we can have a solid, official release date now?

The Beatles: Rock Band DLC to include Sgt. Pepper's, Rubber Soul albums

It's quite a bit easier to predict The Beatles: Rock Band album DLC than it is for the regular Rock Band song packs, limited as it is to, you know, Beatles albums. That leaves the timing and order of the releases as the major variables. In a rather lengthy feature about Harmonix's upcoming tribute project, The New York Times reveals two more albums that will join Abbey Road as DLC soon after the game's release: Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. We're glad we won't have to wait until we're sixty-four to play songs from Sgt. Pepper's with a little help from our friends.[Via Shacknews]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Spyborgs release bumped up a week to September 22

Capcom has just sent word that its upcoming Wii title, Spyborgs, will be available on September 22, a week earlier than expected. To celebrate the news, Capcom has also dished out some new screens and its first in a series of webisodes highlighting the title, which has such witty one-liners as, "I eat bots for breakfast," and, "Time to kick bot." ... but, if Stinger is part robot and he eats bots for breakfast, isn't that kinda cannibalism? Stop what you're doing and listen to the Nintendo Mixtape

Doing yard work? Put down the rake. In the middle of intense litigation? Drop it. Giving birth? Hold it in. Whatever you're doing, you need to stop right now and listen to the Nintendo Mixtape. Created by New York hip hop group, No Question? (warning: MySpace link), the Got Game? album sets all of its tracks to mixes of 8-bit Nintendo music and phat beats. And it's awesome. We suggest you start with "Double Dragons" -- we've embedded its video after the break. For those at work, keep in mind that the video and some lyrics are a tad inappropriate. That said, if your boss hears this and does anything other than give you a promotion on the spot, he has no soul. Oh, and the entire album can be yours for the reasonable price of nothing. Yeah, you're welcome.

Nintendo: No plans for Wii Sports Resort bundle

Having released a new (and popular) Wii Sports, it seems fairly obvious that Nintendo would start bundling that with Wii hardware, right? Well, Nintendo rarely does the obvious. In an interview with Toronto Thumbs, Nintendo of Canada's Matt Ryan dismissed the idea of a new bundle in the near future. "The long-term plan is difficult to say, but I can tell you that there are no plans to make Wii Sports Resort what is packed in with the Wii purchase," Ryan said, adding "What is in the Wii box will remain the same." In case you couldn't pick up the subtext, he reiterated "Wii Sports Resort will not replace Wii Sports."Why not? Ryan described Resort as "more full-on software that you're used to purchasing at retail at that price point," while the original Wii Sports is "designed to show off what the Wii Remote can do." Although Japanese consumers have had no issues with buying separate copies of Wii Sports.Normally, we'd just assume that there is a plan for a bundle, but Nintendo doesn't want to talk about it -- except that there haven't been official bundles for Wii Fit or Mario Kart Wii. Like we said, Nintendo avoids the obvious.

Flipnote Studio moving to Europe this Friday [Update: it's out in North America right now!]

[Baffling update: Hatena announced that the site and the software are available in the US and Canada today, which is totally not a Monday!]One of the DSi's killer apps will finally be available outside of Japan. Nintendo announced that Flipnote Studio, the DSiWare animation tool, will be released in Europe this Friday, for the price of zero DSi Points. The app, called Ugoku Memo-chou in Japan, allows users to draw "flip-book"-style animations, add sound, and share them via a special site, "Ugomemo Hatena," run by Japanese blog service Hatena.Delightfully, the site has already been relaunched as "Flipnote Hatena" for European users -- we were a bit worried that not all aspects of the service would make it, but you'll be able to upload your animations and watch and rate others' right away! For more on the development of the game and the Hatena connection, check out the "Iwata Asks" interview with staff from both Nintendo and Hatena, and a special Iwata Asks with animator Yoichi Kotabe. And after the break, see a Flipnote animation based on Rhythm Heaven's DJ School.

Psyclone Wii rechargers recalled, pose 'burn or fire hazard'

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall on the "Psyclone Essentials and React Wii 4-Dock Battery Recharge Stations." There are approximately 220,000 of them out there in people's homes and the battery packs (remember, it's a recharge station) can overheat "posing a burn or fire hazard to the consumer." Six incidents have been reported to the agency, with two people reporting minor burns to their hands. The recalled products are distributed by Griffin International and were sold in Target, Toys R Us, Best Buy and Amazon. The Psyclone recharge stations have apparently had problems for a while: we first reported issues with the product back in 2007. Caveat emptor!
