The Tower DS being built in miniature

The Tower DS, the latest handheld version of Vivarium's SimTower/The Tower simulation series, has yet to be released outside of Japan, but it's being re-released over there -- or, at least, the last level of it is. The 1,000 point The Tower DS Classic, out August 26, includes the final stage from the DigiToys-published DS game, with tutorials and explanatory text to help players jump right in. The good news, potentially, is that some company is more likely to translate and release a low-risk downloadable game than a cartridge, so there's a more reasonable chance that this smaller Tower will make the move outside of Japan.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Capcom reveals the outside packaging for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles

The North American box art for Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, as posted on Capcom-Unity today, is very blue. We suspect its overwhelming, vivid blueness will draw attention from retail shoppers. Once they focus more on the luminous blue object on the shelf, they'll see Leon Kennedy (last seen holding a gun in a somewhat different position on the RE4 Wii Edition box) and Claire Redfield in the front, and Code Veronica's Steve Burnside (who may as well be Leon) and ... some guy in the background. Also, zombies.See the full box art after the break!

Nintendo's Kaigler: Hardcore Wii game sales could go long tail ... maybe

If there's one thing that Nintendo VP of corporate affairs Denise Kaigler knows, it's first-party game sales. In a recent Wired interview, she happily expounded on the "long tail" that Nintendo first-party games tend to enjoy (we're looking at you, anything with Mario in the title), though couldn't say as much for third-party sales on Wii -- especially those of the "hardcore" variety. When asked about slow sales of critically acclaimed titles MadWorld and The Conduit, Kaigler said that both games could follow the non-traditional Nintendo sales trend (the aforementioned "long tail"), but her comments seemed rooted in speculation. "You know, I don't know ... it could be titles have the same type of sales curve that a lot of Nintendo titles have -- titles [that] don't follow that traditional sales curve where they launch big and then that's it." She said that Nintendo remains "hopeful" that the titles will move more units in the future, calling them both "deep experiences," though we're not sure those kind words will help soothe Sega's assuredly dented coffers.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DJ Hero Renegade Edition packs Jay-Z/Eminem CDs, fancy case/stand

click for Renegade Edition gallery
If you have the urge to spend even more than $120 for DJ Hero, we've got great news. When the game launches, you'll have the option of picking up the "Renegade Edition" of the game, which includes a special turntable, a hardshell case that converts into a stand and a two-disc CD set of Jay-Z and Eminem music that features some previously unreleased tracks. Not that this comes as a complete surprise. Now, we could take or leave the CDs (Music that you don't pretend to play? What, is it for babies?) but the case/stand actually sounds pretty slick. Here's hoping the price (which we have no clue on, naturally) is right. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Artist resume reveals Wii plan for Warren Spector's 'Epic Mickey' [update 2: now with even more concept art!]

[Update 2: NeoGAF user cuyahoga has dug up more conceptual drawings for Epic Mickey from yet another artist, Gary Glover, who lists Junction Point Studios as one of his clients. His drawings (added to the gallery) appear to depict various lands from Disney's themeparks using the established steampunk / dystopian look of the game, suggesting that it may be broken up into these themed "worlds." [Update: superannuation found concept art labeled "Epic Mickey" on the site of artist Fred Gambino! Have a look in the gallery -- if this is what the game looks like, with its rickety machine characters and post-apocalyptic Magic Kingdom, we are in. "Y"? Because we like it.]More evidence has appeared for the existence of Epic Mickey, the "steampunk" Mickey Mouse game from Warren Spector's Junction Point Studios. Artist Tony Pulham lists his work as a concept artist on the project, which is described as a "Wii Video Game." The fact that Pulham started at Junction Point in June suggests that the game hasn't been canceled yet!Of course, it could appear on other platforms, but at least we know now that one of the platforms in the works is Nintendo's, which is appropriate for a game rumored to be Disney's latest attempt at a Mario-style game.

Cabela's Outdoor Adventures shoots into fall

It seems like every game except for Modern Warfare 2 is being pushed into 2010. One game, however, is not afraid of Modern Warfare 2 -- Cabela's Outdoor Adventures on 360, PS2, PS3, Wii, and PC. Having bravely faced down Halo 3 at retail, the Cabela's series is ready to triumph over adversity once again, thanks to the power of a "simulation-style, seamlessly integrated experience that includes big game hunting, fishing and bird shooting."The new game features over 50 different hunting and fishing challenges, animal call and stealth gameplay elements, and a new VITALS system. Yes, that is an acronym ("Visually Integrated Targeting and Lock-on System) but it really is just about shooting stuff in the vitals.Outdoor Adventures comes out this fall. Now that we just read about the VITALS system, we're thinking that if we were Activision, and Cabela's told us it wanted this game out in the fall, we would make sure that happened.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ubisoft and THQ CEOs on the declining (stable?) DS market, and piracy

The CEOs of two of the largest video game publishers appeared to share completely contradictory views on one issue: the declining (or stable?) DS software sales market. Arguing one side was Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, who blamed his company's poor Q1 showing in part on a declining DS software market. On the other side is Brian Farrel, CEO of THQ, who seemingly responded directly to Guillemot's accusation saying that "it's not a bad market."Guillemot claimed that piracy in Europe, particularly Spain, was in part to blame for the drop in DS sales. Farrell said, "I know there's been a lot of talk in Europe about piracy. We've been pleased with our DS, in particular, catalog sales. It's not a bad market." Both CEOs looked to the latest DS revision - the DSi - to ameliorate some of the piracy concerns. "For DSi, the piracy is a lot less than on the normal DS," Guillemot said. Farrell said, in keeping with his promising view of the DS market, "We think there's some growth coming with the DSi."While the PSP has certainly had its fair share of piracy over the years, Guillemot praised Sony's evolution of the machine. "The PSP has always been a machine with lots of piracy, so it's a machine we were not developing too much on because it was pirated. Now there are new ways to control the piracy so we have reinvested on the machine." That reinvestment has obviously come in the form of Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines. "It'll be interesting to see how the PSP business continues with Sony's new entry," Farrell said, referring to the PSP go. "But we're not seeing any major trends in the handheld business between the DS, PSP, and even the iPhone that are affecting our overall outlook at this time."Ubisoft, for its part, is looking for other, unique ways to curb piracy on platforms like the DS. "We are working to put new figurines and new elements in the box that will change [the impact of piracy] in the future but in the short term it's effecting us," Guillemot said. It'll effect you a lot less if you bundle some of those adorable Rabbid figurines with every game you ship. Just sayin'.
