NintendoWare Weekly: Monkeys, Musketeers and more Sudoku

Just as expected, today marks the release of the first episode of Tales of Monkey Island on WiiWare. If comical puzzles aren't your thing, there're also puzzles of the humorless variety in a bit of Sudoku for the DSi. Or, if you're looking for some swordplay -- without the insults -- there's a new WiiWare game featuring The Three Musketeers. Oh, and it would appear Nintendo has run out of steam on the Virtual Console, as this week marks the second in a row where there has been no new Virtual Console game. Hey, Nintendo, looking for an idea of what to release next? How about that game starring the boy from Onett?

Non-Sony Ghostbusters releases dated in Europe

Namco Bandai partners has announced that Ghostbusters will officially arrive on European Wii, DS and Xbox 360 consoles (and PCs) on October 23, according to VideoGamer.com. Thus far, the game has only been officially available for the PS3 and PS2 thanks to its initial European publisher, Sony. That said, the North American Xbox 360 version is reportedly not region-locked, allowing European gamers to import the title.Still, for Nintendo and Xbox players longing for what Play Magazine calls the "best damn Ghostbusters game [they've] ever seen" (as opposed to the vastly superior version we were hoping for), the wait is going to be just a bit longer.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

DJ Jazzy Jeff: He's the DJ, You're the DJ Hero

You may know DJ Jazzy Jeff as Will Smith's musical partner from back when he performed as the Fresh Prince. You may also know him as the guy who Uncle Phil threw out of the house all the time on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Now, younger people (who, ironically, just won't understand Jazzy Jeff's catalog) will know him as that one guy in DJ Hero. Activision announced that DJ Jazzy Jeff will be joining DJ Shadow, Grandmaster Flash, and the rest as a playable character in the turntablism game. He has also contributed two song mash-ups: Tears for Fears' "Shout" vs. Eric B. & Rakim's "Eric B. Is President" and LL Cool J's "Rock the Bells" vs. The Aranbee Pop Symphony Orchestra's "Bittersweet Symphony" (the original instrumental track to which The Verve added vocals). Gameplay video of both mixes is available after the break.

Dead Space being directed with an 'Eagle Eye' by D.J. Caruso

Variety reports "vidgame" (seriously, Variety, stop that!) Dead Space is going to the big screen under the watchful gaze of Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso. The producers and EA are currently talking to screenwriters and will then auction the movie to a studio. EA created a bidding war last year when it auctioned off God of War-esque Dante's Inferno -- even before it officially announced the game. The publisher also currently has Sims, Army of Two and Mass Effect movies in varying stages of development. The Variety piece also mentions that EA is "working on the second and third installments" of the Dead Space franchise. Although that can be interpreted to mean sequels to the main game, it could also mean Extraction and the expected sequel. We're following up with Variety and EA for clarification and will update when we hear back.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

UK chart get: Tourists flock to Wii Sports Resort

Now that Nintendo has finally started chartering some flights to lovely Wuhu Island, folks have been eager to snap up Wii Sports Resort for their very own ticket. In the UK, Chart Track data shows the follow-up to 2006's console pack-in is quite the popular little piece of software, as the sequel earned the top spot on last week's All Formats chart. Strong start, but will it have the staying power of Wii Fit?Last week's winner, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, has thus been bumped down to the second spot, with EA's other darling, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, snagging bronze.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes pushed back to October 6

While certainly not the most anticipated Star Wars title coming down the pipe, there's plenty of folks looking forward to the release of Krome Studios' Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes -- folks who are about to be somewhat disappointed. During yesterday's Star Wars panel at San Diego Comic Con, LucasArts Senior Marketing Manager Matt Shell talked about the game, and mentioned an October 6 release date for the title. That's a bit of a delay from the initial launch date of September 15.The crowd at the Comic Con panel didn't react unfavorably to the release bump, however. Perhaps they were placated by Olivia Munn, who was apparently cosplaying as "short-shorts Leia."[Via Big Download]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lionsgate imagines Wii movie store 'will launch worldwide soon'

Lionsgate president of digital media Curt Marvis is hopeful that Nintendo will launch a worldwide movie store sometime soon. In an interview with Casualgaming.biz, Marvis explained that Lionsgate's current strategy is to sell more film and television properties through connected video game consoles. According to Marvis, the horror and action genres are best suited for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users, but the Wii is likely to sell more "mass-market" content, due to its "broader audience." Currently, the Nintendo Wii has streaming film and television content available in Japan, although rumors have been swirling that Netflix is a possibility on the console Stateside. Thanks for at least stirring the pot in a different direction, Curt!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
