Ubisoft's Guillemot explains Splinter Cell, Red Steel delays

Maybe this afternoon's news that Splinter Cell: Conviction - aka Badass: The Game - and Red Steel 2 were being delayed from later this year to the beginning of next year took you by surprise. Not us, Reader. We've become so desensitized to the pain of losing highly anticipated titles like Conviction to the vagaries of a tumultuous market that we can no longer tell delays from cancellations. We've got it bad. So, we tuned into Ubisoft's conference call this afternoon in the hopes of gleaning some new information from CEO Yves Guillemot. To our pleasure, Mr. Guillemot provided some details explaining why one of his company's already very delayed major releases would be delayed further. "Red Steel and Splinter Cell are going to greatly benefit from the additional polishing time we are providing and will clearly be among the leading brands on the Wii and 360 for the March quarter," Guillemot said. If you'll recall, Splinter Cell: Conviction had already missed its original 2007 release date. When asked why these two games were being delayed, Guillemot explained, "The changes on Splinter Cell and Red Steel - it's just a question of polish. The team was asking that they couldn't be with the level of quality on all the maps and all the game for the end of the year, so they had asked for more time to be able to come with a better product, for both of those games. The quality of the games is there for what you've been able to see at E3, but we were not able to have that same quality on the full game of those two products." Of course, in a conference call full of analysts and investors, the tiny matter of lost sales came up. Guillemot admitted that, for "those two products, it's around a million units" of lost sales in the first month. However, when faced with releasing subpar titles or losing a stronger opening month, Guillemot came down strongly in favor of the latter. "We really think with the level of quality that we'll be able to obtain with the time we give them we will have a long shelf life for those products," he explained. "Now, because [Conviction and Red Steel 2] are launching during that quarter, they will not do as many units for the first month as they would have done in November/December, but we think that on the long-term they can achieve more units than what they would've done." And it sounds like Ubisoft's patient partner for the still Xbox 360-exclusive Conviction - that would be Microsoft - doesn't mind waiting another couple months. Guillemot says, "We still have the full support of Microsoft because they know that if we can bring a very high-quality game this will help their machine. So we still have the full support from them." And if they deliver a quality game, they'll have the support of gamers as well. Your move, Ubi. Permalink | Email this | Comments

This Week on the Nintendo Channel: More Wii Sports Resort

Nintendo's marketing train keeps chugging along, as Wii Sports Resort once again takes over the Nintendo Channel. This week's highlight is a pretty slick commercial for the game that, while nice, fails to really highlight some of the best parts of the game. Where's the wakeboarding? Where's the cycling?

Confirmed: no genie character in North American Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Hardcore Hakushon Daimao fans: in case you haven't already, you should probably import Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Producer Ryota Niitsuma confirmed to Siliconera that Hakushon Daimao, the big genie character, won't be in the North American version. This is the "minor pruning" to which Capcom previously alluded."We had some licensing issues with him so we weren't able to obtain him for the American version," Niitsuma told Siliconera. Apparently, the original Hakushon Daimao show ran across the world in the '70s, so the holdout could be any number of companies. Niitsuma said that "new characters" would replace Daimao -- confirmation of the "http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/tatsunoko-vs-capcom-gets-online-play-5-new-characters-for-north/">five new characters" promised on Capcom's press release (which was later reissued with no mention of new characters)? We can only hope that one of those characters will feature Daimao's math minigame. Or not, actually.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

EA Sports' fall soundtrack in full, from Alexisonfire to Zap Mama

What kind of crazy, block-bustin' beats are you going to be nodding your head to when playing this fall's EA Sports titles? The publisher wants you to know, in full, well before any of the games launch. Why? Well, we're not entirely sure. One thing that's clearly apparent from the various soundtracks: target markets. We're not exactly left scratching our heads over who wants Röyksopp rolling in the background while playing a rousing game of footie (hint: EUROPEANS) or who wants Alice in Chains pumping in Giants Stadium (hint: UNITED STATESIANS). Either way, head after the break for the whole list, including the tunes in Madden NFL 10, NBA Live 10, NHL 10, and FIFA 10. And then go out and buy a Röyksopp album. You'll thank us.

Australian Scribblenauts pre-orders get sweet hat

If you happen to come from the land down under, pre-ordering Scribblenauts at EB Games will award you with some Scribble-haute couture. More specifically, a pre-order will snag lucky gamers a hat (a Scribble-hat, if you will). You might be wondering on what occasions it would be appropriate to wear such a hat. The correct answer to that question is all of them.We contacted GameStop to see if the hat would be available for North American pre-orders as well. Should they be exclusive to Australia, we're assuming the only other way to obtain the hat would be to write "pre-order bonus" within the game itself.[Thanks, Klim!]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dragon Quest IX sales cross 3 million mark

In the old American West, emigrants traveling in wagon trains through the plains would pass around the unenviable task of cooking for the group. Following in that grand tradition, the Joystiq staffers force each other to take turns writing stories about how Dragon Quest IX has sold several or perhaps even many severals of copies. In this case, the magic number is 3.2 million, as reported by Famitsu. While it's still 1.8 million short of the 5 million Square Enix hopes to ship, it's, you know, not bad. Discover the first screens, trailer for La-Mulana

Nicalis and Nigoro officially announced the WiiWare release of La-Mulana today, launching a teaser site for the Wii remake of the 8-bit styled "Action Archaeological Ruins Exploration" game. Nicalis estimates that the game will be completed around November of this year for a "late 2009" release. We'll be able to roll right from Cave Story (presumably) into another indie platformer remake! After the break you'll find the trailer, which shows off the lush visual upgrade La-Mulana is receiving for this release. While we weren't pleased about losing the obvious MSX influence from the original, the new game looks really nice. The real draw, for us, is the music. It's so '80s-anime![Via GoNintendo]
