Scenes from the Scribblenauts launch at Nintendo World

Did you miss the Nintendo World launch event for Scribblenauts yesterday due to your inability to spell "transporter beam" (that silent a is a killer)? Well now's your chance to experience it vicariously through three still images: it'll be magical! Above you can see a long line of people wearing the infamous rooster hat in the middle (uptown-ish) of Manhattan, waiting for their chance to purchase the game. After the break, you can see that lucky lady on the far left picking up her copy of the game and there's another image of Scribblenauts' Art Director Edison Yan, Creative Director Jeremiah Slaczka and Technical Director Marius Fahlbusch signing autographs at the event. You can pick up your copy of the word-infused title starting tomorrow at your local gamemonger.

ESRB: Dragon Quest Wars draws near

Right above Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth (!!!) on the ESRB ratings page, a listing for Dragon Quest Wars reveals that Square Enix is considering a North American release for the DSiWare game.Dragon Quest Wars is a simplistic strategy game in which players control teams of four monsters, each trying to destroy the other teams or invade their bases (represented by a goal line). It's developed by Intelligent Systems, which makes it sort of a Nintendo/Square Enix collaboration. And it's got online multiplayer! It seems like a nice diversion while we wait to hear anything at all about Dragon Quest IX.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Toys R Us ad leaks $50 Wii price cut

No, not to $50, though that would be an awesome way to tie up this holiday season for Nintendo. Kotaku shared this possible excerpt from a future Toys R Us ad, showing Wiis for sale for just $199, with Wii Sports, effective September 27. Now, we're not going to call this true or confirmed or anything that implies we have any confidence in this image. In fact, there are a few possibilities:

  1. It's real (yay!)
  2. The art of faking retail ads has advanced significantly since the run-up to the PS3 Slim release, and it's a convincing fake
  3. It's real, but the "price cut" term is actually referring to a Toys R Us sale (still yay, but not universally so).

In any case, just don't buy a Wii until late September. You've waited almost three years anyway!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Italian gamers set new Guinness world record with Guitar Hero 5

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, Italy set a Guinness world record for "largest number of participants to play in a single Guitar Hero session over a 24-hour period." At the FNAC store, 594 people participated in a single, massive Guitar Hero 5 play session coordinated to celebrate the European release of Activision's latest music title. The record was set using Guitar Hero 5's Party Play mode, which supports drop-in and drop-out gameplay. There's no word on whether any Montagues or Capulets were harmed during the event, but as soon as we hear something, we'll let you know.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Two cheapo DSiWare shmups in Japan this week

The surprise announcement that Nintendo would publish an Arika-developed shooter on DSiWare was weird enough. We didn't expect to see more shmups on the service within a couple of weeks, but Genterprise has revealed exactly that.Publisher Genterprise has announced two shooters as part of its 200 DSi Point "GG Series," both developed by Wario: Master of Disguise/Boing! Docomodake DS developer Suzak. Z-One is a horizontally scrolling shooter featuring a "Pod," a multidirectional-shooting "Option" kind of device that flies near your ship. And Wonder Land is an Alice in Wonderland-themed vertical shmup. Being made specifically as super-cheap games, it's doubtful they'll be great. But they will be very cheap when they come out in Japan this Wednesday.[Via Andriasang]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Surprise! FFCC: The Crystal Bearers out in North America this December

Wii gamers looking forward to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers may find it hard to believe that the action-RPG is coming out at all, after years of wondering what was going on with the game. But Square Enix announced a Japan release date of November 26, giving us hope that it would come out worldwide soonish, if not this year. But it is coming out this year in North America! Barely! Crystal Bearers will be out in North America on December 26, just in time for people to return whatever games they received as Christmas gifts from well-meaning relatives. And just in time for students to spend their holiday breaks tossing Cactuars around.

Guitar Hero 5 goes straight to the top of the UK charts

Guitar Hero 5, which is like the tenth (give or take a couple) installment in the series, has resonated with UK consumers and hit a high note atop the Chart Track all-formats chart. The Dark Knight of Arkham Asylum -- who was perched above the charts for two weeks -- slipped off the top to the number three spot, with Colin McRae: Dirt 2 taking the silver. The Beatles: Rock Band premiered at the number four spot, which some are sure to find disappointing. Both Guitar Hero and Rock Band have previously debuted at the fourth and sixth spot, respectively, with previous iterations. Music games may be on a sales decline, but they apparently still know how to make an entrance.
