Conan isn't the world's best Beatles: Rock Band bassist

On the eve of the launch of Harmonix's digital British invasion, Conan O'Brien had a very special guest on his show -- Dhani Harrison, a collaborator on The Beatles: Rock Band and son of the late, great George Harrison. He spoke with everyone's favorite ginger giant, then demoed the title with Conan, who struggled on the bass line for "Birthday." Sadly, it looked as though he was playing on Easy. Actually, it looked even easier than that. Does Beatles: Rock Band have a "Toddler" setting? You can check out NBC's site for a video of the interview and "Birthday" sampling. As for the Cone, we suggest he stay off the gee-tars and stick with his Edith Bunker-inspired vocal work.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

OFLC: Two more Street Fighter games on Virtual Console

With the slowing pace at which Nintendo releases Virtual Console games, it's taking longer and longer for our Virtually Overlooked columns to be revealed as prescient -- but it's happening. The Australian OFLC ratings board has just revealed two classic Street Fighter games heading to Wii soon: Street Fighter II' Champion Edition and ... Fighting Street, the Turbografx-16 CD version of the very first Street Fighter. The Champion Edition could be the arcade game, but is probably the PC Engine version, which is surprisingly faithful for an 8-bit port of the arcade game. It's another port, but, like Fighting Street, it holds value as a curiosity. [Via NeoGAF]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Activision: Courtney Love agreed to Cobain avatar

This morning, we reported on Courtney Love's tweeted allegations that the ghastly Kurt Cobain avatar was included in Guitar Hero 5 without her consent. Though the company didn't mention whether or not the lawsuit has actually been filed against them, Activision just sent us a statement refuting Love's claims:"Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain's likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero(r) 5."Maybe Love did sign off on it, but just doesn't remember. There, we said it. We were all thinking it anyway.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Non-Sony versions of Ghostbusters delayed in Europe

While North American Xbox 360 and Wii gamers should have mastered ghostbusting by now, European players were forced to put their talents on the shelf when the game was announced as a timed exclusive for Sony platforms. Sadly, European gamers will have to wait a little longer to capture a copies of Ghostbusters on Microsoft and Nintendo's platforms.CVG reports that Ghostbusters for the Xbox 360 and Wii has been delayed from October 23rd to November 6th. Of course, European Xbox 360 owners are more than welcome to import the game, since the Ghostbusters NTSC release uses no region protection.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Space Invaders Extreme 2 landing in Europe October 2

click to invade the gallerySquare Enix has been distressingly quiet about Space Invaders Extreme 2 since May. We know if we were about to sell people the sequel to one of the best DS games of last year, we'd ... mention it, occasionally. Thankfully for our sanity, the company did make an announcement today, cementing a PAL release date of October 2.While we wait for a firmer North American release date than "fall," we'll just enjoy these screenshots the company sent out with the PAL announcement. We're sure we'll be exploring the bingo system and falling into a techno-music-induced Nagoya-attacking trance soon enough.

Rumor: Frank West, Zero to be in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Shoryuken forum user mumu recently went snooping around the Japanese site for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and uncovered some interesting items. Within the source code of the character section of the site, mumu found lines of code hinting towards the remaining secret characters:

  • 'images/oncharactor_btn_zero.jpg'
  • 'images/oncharactor_btn_frank.jpg'
  • 'images/oncharactor_btn_yatter02.jpg'
  • 'images/oncharactor_btn_joe.jpg'
  • 'images/oncharactor_btn_tekkabla.jpg'

So, aside from yesterday's Tekkaman Blade, mumu postulates that Dead Rising's Frank West and Zero from the Mega Man series are also going to be in the game and, on the Tatsunoko side, we'll get Yatterman #2 from Yatterman and Joe Asakura from Gatchaman. If you'll excuse us, we'll be crying in the corner, objecting once again to the lack of Phoenix Wright.[Via Siliconera]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Overturn now open to cross-region play

Following a weekend of play against the team, Studio Zan has announced another cool initiative for Overturn's online mode: the ability for American players to connect and fight with Japanese players! "As more gamers from Japan join in on the fun," Studio Zan told us in a press release, "the game will offer more match ups against more different types of gamers that use more different variations of mechs and fighting strategies."Of course, since the game's been out in Japan since last December, anyone who's still online and looking for opponents is a seasoned veteran, and thus basically invincible. But the good news is that you can see how those invincible players have customized their mechs! Permalink | Email this | Comments

Courtney Love intends to sue Activision over Guitar Hero 5's reanimated Cobain [update]

If you were disgusted by the inclusion of a playable Kurt Cobain in Guitar Hero 5, you weren't the only one: Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, has gone on record (well, on Twitter, anyway, in what looks a lot like Courtney Love's real Twitter account) to register her disapproval, saying, "For the record this Guitar Hero (expletive) is breach of contract on a Bullys part and there will be a proper addressing of this and retraction." Love plans to "sue the (expletive) out of Activision," speaking for herself, Cobain's estate, and "the various LLCs Cobain Enterprises."She claims to have never given approval for a Kurt Cobain avatar. "We have NOTHING to do with this," she said across two tweets (presented here as originally typed, with the exception of connecting the two messages). "it was presented to me and oi said 'show me a better avataR' TO DRAG MY HEELS., never did i intend on allowing GUITARHERO for me or for Kurt i am NOT yoko (expletive) Ono no ofense to her, but i am a different person entirely and this is insane."The Cobain avatar was upsetting enough when we thought Love had signed off on it. But now that we hear she hasn't, we're worried for our own sakes. We could all end up playable in a Guitar Hero game at any time.[Via Perez Hilton, thanks, Andrew M.!]Update: Activision responds to these tweets here, claiming that Love did indeed okay the use of the avatar.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
