PSA: Beatles: Rock Band 'Special Value Edition' isn't such a special value

In addition to the fancy Premium Bundle of The Beatles: Rock Band, which features the new Beatles replica instruments, the game is available in a "Special Value Edition" for those unwilling or unable to drop $250 for a single game. The bundle contains the game and some regular Rock Band instruments for $160 -- a price that is cut by $20 on Amazon. MTV confirmed to us that the instruments included with the bundle are those from Rock Band 1.Here's the thing about this bundle: despite the fact that it says "special value" on the box, it's not the best value on a Beatles: Rock Band set you can get. If you want the superior Rock Band 2 instruments, you can get the RB2 bundle right now for $100. Purchase a separate Beatles disc, and you've got two games and one set of (nice) instruments for the same $160.If you don't care which instruments you get, and you're planning to buy on 360 or PS3, you can go even cheaper and grab the $79 Rock Band/Rock Band 2 game pack, which includes the Rock Band 1 instruments and Rock Band 1 and 2. Throw a $60 Beatles in and you have three Rock Band games for the price of one Special Value bundle.Of course, this information is mostly valuable for people planning ahead. The real place of the Special Value Edition is in stores, as a single box that makes an attractive impulse purchase.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Take on Overturn's developers this weekend

Have you been enjoying Studio Zan's robot fighting game Overturn? Why not show your appreciation by letting the game's development staff destroy you in combat? (You probably won't have to let them.) Or, to put a nicer spin on it, by showing the developers your customized mech! (Which will then be destroyed.) Starting today through September 6, Studio Zan will be online in Overturn from 6PM through 12AM PST under the name "StudioZan," looking to engage players in matches. This kind of thing seems common on Xbox Live, but it doesn't happen that often in WiiWare games -- mostly, we suppose, because online play doesn't happen that often in WiiWare games. All the more reason to appreciate Studio Zan!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Latest RE: Darkside Chronicles trailers terrify us for the wrong reasons

The latest Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles trailers reveal a very competent on-rails shooter being played by someone who is guaranteed to become zombie noms in the upcoming apocalypse. We feel obligated to remind our younger readers that when The Zombie Apocalypse[TM] happens -- and it will -- that one should always aim for the head! Please don't flail about like a meth monkey, shooting the torso or arms. That's just tickling the zombie, who after being knocked down for a few seconds, will proceed to shamble up to your face and bite off your nose to spite your life. Check out the video above and after the break and learn what not to do when we fight for survival.

Sin and Punishment 2 flying into Japan October 29

The Japanese box art for Sin and Punishment 2, which appears to have been cropped out of a Famitsu scan by NeoGAFfer neo2046, is awesome. We're all thinking it: it's far too awesome to survive the trip overseas. This amazing art is doomed to be replaced with 3D character art upon its release in North America. But we can appreciate it now!We can also appreciate the tiny text at the bottom, which reveals a release date of October 29 in Japan. Nintendo of America has yet to update the "Q1 2010" date for North America -- a date that must have seemed like a good idea at the time, but now places this niche game, which we want to protect like a little baby, in the middle of a very dangerous game environment.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

First Okamiden footage: it's Okami, but smaller

As part of a "Tokyo Game Show Click Theater" showing off its TGS lineup, Capcom released a brief teaser for the DS Okami followup, Okamiden. The gameplay footage looks slightly choppy, and the textures are slightly rough, but the game is unmistakably Okami and looks pretty impressive for a DS game. Besides, it's still in an early stage. We're officially torn now. We don't want to trust an Okami game that doesn't involve Clover Studio, but Chibiterasu is unbelievably cute, and we want to own anything with his/her image on it. The game will be playable at TGS, and attendees will receive a free fan (with Chibiterasu on it, so see above for our opinion of the item).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Remember to pre-order Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for a free soundtrack

GameStop's listing for Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (also on PS2, PSP) includes a pre-order item that seems perfect for a Silent Hill game: a soundtrack disc containing "18 of your favorite tracks from the Silent Hill series." Akira Yamaoka's music is one of the standout elements of the series, so if you don't already have a bunch of Silent Hill pre-order bonus soundtracks, you'll want this one. Oddly, the wording makes it sound like it's a Silent Hill sampler and not necessarily a Shattered Memories sampler, though we're sure at least a few tracks from the new game will appear.Shattered Memories does not have an official release date, but GameStop has moved its tentative date from October to November 3. So it's delayed, kind of?[Via GoNintendo]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TMNT Arcade Attack assails DS this holiday

Ubisoft is shelling out another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game this year with TMNT: Arcade Attack for DS. As the name implies, the game will feature the arcade-style, beat-em-up gameplay most recently seen in Turtles in Time, but this will be an all-new game. Players take on Shredder (who else?), along with his bebop and rock steady rogue's gallery of baddies, with a friend through local wireless -- or let a turtle-controlling AI buddy help out.If the game's title sounds familiar, it's probably because we heard some rumblings about it a week ago. Those attending PAX can play the game in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Bus, located at the convention's entrance. Drop us a line in the comments if you happen to try it out.

ESRB reveals Data East arcade collection on Wii and more

A bit of a news roundup from the ESRB today. First off, the ratings board revealed a collection of Data East arcade games for Wii, called Data East Arcade Classics, containing Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja (!), Burger Time, Caveman Ninja, Street Slam, Secret Agent, Magical Drop III, and more, published by Majesco. It would appear that Data East (or G-mode, the company that holds the rights to Data East's games) doesn't feel like charging 8 bucks for each game on the Virtual Console Arcade.Other surprises include Crash 'N The Boyz: Street Challenge (which was known as Crash 'N The Boys: Street Challenge on the NES), the Kunio (River City Ransom) sports game, and Tomena Sanner, the intriguingly quirky-looking one-button WiiWare running game from Konami!

Special Scribblenauts launch at Nintendo World store Sept. 13

For those in the New York area, pencil in on your calendar that Scribblenauts will launch two days early at the Nintendo World Store in Rockefeller Plaza. Scribblenauts creative director Jeremiah Slaczka will be there to autograph copies of the game, and there will also be "premium item giveaways" -- which had better be the infamous "rooster hat."The event kicks off at 11AM, but for those who've got their h-e-a-r-t set on picking up a copy of the game, it may be prudent to arrive earlier. We have no idea how big of a launch this will be, but in a city of 10 million-plus people, there's surely a long line in the making. It's best not to tempt fate. Hmm, fate gets us thinking of karma. Wonder if we put k-a-r-m-a in the game ... will we get a female dog?Permalink | Email this | Comments

Get ready to Pokemon Rumble at PAX

In June, Nintendo released a Pokemon game in Japan that even those of us well over catchin' em all might look at with interest: Melee! Pokemon Scramble; a four-player brawler starring robotic Pokemon. Nintendo just announced that it's coming to North America -- we know, shocking that a game in Nintendo's most popular franchise would be released outside of Japan -- and will be shown off for the first time at the Penny Arcade Expo, or as some fans may now term it, the Pokemon Arcade Expo. The Japanese trailer is above. In addition to the newly-announced Pokemon Rumble, attendees will get a chance to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and other Nintendo titles.Permalink | Email this | Comments
