First screens for Game Arts' WiiWare platformer

This May at a Grandia Online presentation, Game Arts teased an upcoming WiiWare title called Kage no Shounen, Hikari no Yousei (Boy of Shadow, Fairy of Light). The latest Famitsu magazine includes the first screens of the game now called Shadow Walker: Kage no Shounen, Hikari no Yousei. The concept is somewhere between Hudson's Shadow Tower and WayForward's LIT, as far as we can tell, featuring a character who can only walk in shadow. We're sure we'll find out more this week. The game is expected to release to Japan's Wii Shop next month, for 1,000 Wii Points.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

First DSi-exclusive game found: Monster Finder

Just yesterday we heard that DSi-only retail games would be on the way soon. Today, Japanese publisher Alpha Unit announced the first one, Monster Finder -- though, since it was announced for Japan, we doubt it's one of the games being referred to yesterday!Basically the only details available about Monster Finder right now are that it includes over 100 different varieties of monster and that those monsters are found with the DSi camera (hence the DSi exclusivity); and probably represented in-game by the scanner-gun thing seen in the teaser artwork. It's part Monster Rancher, part augmented reality. Monster Finder will be released sometime this winter in Japan.[Via Andriasang]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Games This Month: September 2009

It seemed like such a great promotion at the time: "Justin, be the reviews editor, it'll be great! We haven't done reviews before so the bar couldn't be lower!" And they were right, it couldn't have been an easier gig. For the months after I started in February, I would dash off the occasional review about the occasional interesting release, my time never too taxed to preclude my evening constitutional or spinning classes. But oh, folly! Oh hubris! How had I forgotten that for every spring and summer of idle relaxation, there's an autumnal retribution? Come, my friends, stare with me into the fanged, gaping maw of ... September. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wii Internet Channel now free, with updated Flash [update]

Nintendo just dropped the price of the Wii Opera browser in Japan and PAL markets to nothing, its original "price" during the system's launch, when the browser was in beta. VOOKS photographed the Wii message that announced the price drop, which also revealed that the version of Flash used in the Wii browser has been updated from Flash 7 to Flash Lite 3.1-- which should make the Internet Channel much more useful. Users who paid 500 Wii Points for the browser will receive a refund of sorts in October -- a credit that can be used on any NES game.In Japan, the same refund offer applies, and Nintendo is providing more opportunities for free Virtual Console games. Since early this year, Nintendo of Japan has offered 500-point bonuses to Wii owners for helping others get online. Starting October 21, Nintendo will expand this program with new rewards: those who achieve "Helper Meister 10" status (by helping 10 others connect) will gain access to every Nintendo-published Famicom game. "Helper Meister 20" will unlock all Virtual Console games on every platform! That should get people going door to door.Update: The Internet Channel is now free in North America, and the NES Virtual Console download credit will be extended to those who purchased the browser in the region.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Harmonix and EA want Rock Band at your bar

To think, just a few years ago a bar advertising "Rock Band" would have just seemed infuriatingly unspecific. Now, Rock Band nights at taverns, dives and watering holes are becoming commonplace enough that EA and Harmonix are formalizing them just a tad. At Rock Band Bar Nights you can register your event and get permission to use the game's logo and access to all of the songs in the Rock Band DLC catalog along with some other nice perks. While we're on the subject, Joystiq Promotions is still looking for clubs that would like to take part in our Sins of a Solar Empire Bar Nights. Despite what you may have guessed, there are plenty of great spots still available.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Famitsu scans show DS Okami sequel 'Okamiden'

Apparent Famitsu magazine scans are out, revealing what would appear to be the promised "Okamiden" game. We can't see the title in this scan, but if an Okami sequel and an unrelated game called Okamiden were revealed at the same time, it would be a pretty weird coincidence. If this is real, it shows a DS sequel to Clover Studios' beloved PS2 action-adventure game, which captures the original's watercolor style admirably, if a bit blockily. Of course, the DS is even more of a natural for the Okami paintbrush mechanic than the Wii is!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wii Fit Plus out Oct. 4 at a svelte $20 price point

During his keynote at the GameStop Manager Conference, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime announced release details for Nintendo's latest money generator, Wii Fit Plus. Current Wii Fit owners looking to add more arm-flapping and faux-Segwaying to their lives will be able to pick up the expanded version of the hit exercise game for just $19.99 on October 4. For new owners, a Wii Fit Plus bundle will replace the existing Wii Fit bundle, which makes sense given that it's the exact same game with added content. The Wii Fit Plus/Balance Board package will retail for $99.99.

Nintendo announces new Wiimote, DSi colors for North America

Nintendo just announced that you'll finally be able to get a new color for your Wii ... mote. Black. This holiday season the company will be making a black Wiimote bundle available with the Wiimote and Wii MotionPlus, including a black Wii jacket, which is very slimming. However, you'll have to buy your black Nunchuk as a standalone, also available Holiday 2009.According to the presser, "The Black bundle is the first new color for the Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus," so let's hope this means a rainbow of colors coming down the pipeline next year. Right now this has nothing to go with, especially since the Wii won't be available in black over here, only in Japan. No mention of new console colors, nor of the blue Wiimote, seen recently at the World Hobby Fair. Will this be a case of having to chase down colors and accessories in different regions?Nintendo is also bringing new DSi colors to North America, in the form of pink and white, available starting September 13. So we'll now have black, blue, white, and pink DSi ... why no funky colors like Japan? They get all the cool stuff.
