VC in Brief: Super Empire Strikes Back (SNES)

Super Star Wars (LucasArts, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)We say: You don't need a Jedi Mind Trick to tell you this is worth the scratch
After taking a week off to hook us up with some Shinobi, the Virtual Console provides us with the promised sequel to Super Star Wars: Super Empire Strikes Back. It's an improvement on the very fun Super Star Wars and ramps up the experience in almost every respect. But, be warned: as fun as it is, it's equally as punishing.
Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Preorder A Boy and His Blob, get a blob

Now here's a novel idea: Preorder A Boy and His Blob at GameStop and receive ... a blob. Well, at least something that looks like the blob from the game's title. In actuality, it's one of those foam rubber stress-relief balls. Only shaped like a the blob -- and far more cute.Note that -- thankfully -- the bonus is just the blob and does not include a boy, foam rubber or otherwise. Girls who preorder the game also get the blob, but are able to claim they're "a girl and her blob," which would probably make a good title for the sequel.A Boy and His Blob is out on October 13 and looks gorgeous.

Fitness First competing with, supporting Wii Fit

The Fitness First gym chain, not content to allow Gold's Gym to dominate the licensed Wii exercise game market, has attached its name to both a Wii game and peripherals. Releasing in Europe this September, NewU Fitness First Personal Trainer includes not just exercise programs but a healthy eating guide as well. In addition, the company has partnered with European accessories manufacturer Blaze to, well, put its name on some standard Wii exercise accessories. The offerings include a silicone Balance Board skin, a yoga mat, a Wiimote holder that straps onto the player's leg, and wrist weights. Oddly, this stuff is all labeled for use with Wii Fit, suggesting a realistic understanding of what people will actually be using it for. The total lack of a consistent marketing campaign suggests just how much thought is going into this. Why not put your own game's name on the accessories? Final Fantasy Gaiden's simplified commands, wonderful monsters

Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden is the turn-based Final Fantasy game that has captured our hearts. The idea of a stripped-down, natively multiplayer classic Final Fantasy game is appealing to those of us weary of cutscenes and "deep" storylines. Besides that, this game will actually be released somewhere in the world this year.

The latest set of screens from the DS RPG highlight the customization of the battle menu. Players can assign six abilities and/or magic spells to spaces on the menu, each of which bears a cost in action points. The screens also feature the new "gem" system, in which monsters occasionally drop gems that can either be sold or placed into a crown shape, which, when filled, grants a new ability.

Finally, Square Enix released some monster art, which is fantastic. Seen here: "Jack Lantern," Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tatsunoko vs Capcom's four new characters to be revealed at TGS 2009

Capcom have revealed it will announce four new characters for the US and European release of Tatsunoko vs Capcom at the 2009 Tokyo Game Show. The four characters -- two from Capcom and two from Tatsunoko -- were teased to Gamespot at GamesCom by producer Ryota Niitsuma, but the game's producer would not name the additions. We're still holding out hope for some Phoenix Wright love, even though the fighting game's dev team claimed the character was once added but removed due to balance issues.Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars adds an improved online mode, with skill level matchmaking allowing US and European players to face-off against gamers from around the world. A release date has yet to be revealed for the Wii-exclusive, but we're almost positive that whatever it is, it won't be soon enough.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Guitar Hero 5 DLC not compatible with World Tour

While original Rock Band owners were given the luxury to continue to buy new tracks for the music title even after the release of its sequel, Guitar Hero fans won't be given the same option when Guitar Hero 5 lands on store shelves. An Activision representative told Destructoid that DLC for the upcoming Guitar Hero 5 will not be compatible with Guitar Hero: World Tour.According to the Activision rep, Guitar Hero 5 DLC will be compatible with future titles in the franchise, but "advancements and innovations" made to the upcoming music title do not allow for tracks to be backwards compatible with World Tour. Don't light the torches and grab the pitchforks just yet though, the same reason has been given for The Beatles: Rock Band's inability to work with previous versions of the game.Thankfully, Activision has already confirmed tracks from Guitar Hero: World Tour will be compatible with Guitar Hero 5 via an in-game importing process -- which adds new features such as band moments, expert+ drumming and the new vocal star power to older tracks.[Via 1UP]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

UK gets better bargain: Pre-order Guitar Hero 5, get World Tour free

Activision's making it awfully hard for folks across this big blue world of ours to not purchase their upcoming rhythm title, Guitar Hero 5 -- here in the States, folks who purchase the game are eligible to receive Guitar Hero: Van Halen for free. However, in the United Kingdom, the offer is incredibly sweeter -- those who pre-order Guitar Hero the Fifth through Amazon can also grab Guitar Hero: World Tour for the low, low price of nothing.OXM received instructions from Amazon.UK on how to utilize the offer -- simply add Guitar Hero 5 (on any platform) to your basket, then add the special promotional version of World Tour for the appropriate console. Go to checkout, and the price of the latter will magically change to zilch. If only this kind economic wizardry applied to every purchase in our life.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
