New Earthworm Jim less new than expected: it's a remake

Sega recently announced that due to a licensing issue with Interplay (a result of the newly announced Gameloft/Interplay Earthworm Jim game), Earthworm Jim would no longer be an option for a new Genesis XBLA game. The company then removed what was at that point the clear winner from its XBLA poll. Why would a new Earthworm Jim prevent the release of an old one? Because the new one, G4TV's The Feed reports, is a remake and not an original game. That means it isn't the Earthworm Jim 4 announced last year, and that the same game will be available on both Virtual Console (the Genesis version was released on VC in October) and WiiWare.

Video: Telltale teases Tales of Monkey Island's second episode

One of the best things about being a pirate must be seeing all of the awesome cave structures littering the Caribbean. There are caves shaped like skulls, caves hiding trunks of gold doubloons and, in the case of Tales of Monkey Island's second episode Siege of Spinner Cal, caves for chatting with your special someone. It's a heck of a lot more romantic than those seedy motels you often frequent. Oh yes, we're watching you.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Scribblenauts trailer highlights press scribblings

The latest trailer for Scribblenauts reveals that lots of websites, including this one, have written words about the game. Many of those words even reflect positively about it! While we knew that a bunch of words had been typed, having been responsible for the typing of some of them, we were still impressed by the number of websites whose writers took time out to write (at least) one word about Scribblenauts. Oh, the trailer also reveals Abraham Lincoln with a minigun. For those of you crying foul because "Abraham Lincoln" is a proper noun ... it's an Abraham Lincoln, not necessarily the Abraham Lincoln. Nyko's 'Wand' controller easier to look at in different colors

Despite the interesting "Trans-Port" technology and the lower price, we'd have to say that the defining characteristic of the Nyko Wand is its ugliness. The four new colors for the device, in our opinion, help ameliorate that ugly factor. It could be because the red and blue buttons are gone in favor of a more monochrome look, or it could be because it's slightly harder to compare these to the stock Wiimote. These four color options will be available in North America and Europe this holiday season. They have already launched in Japan, along with many other colors.

Nyko also announced the Charge Base IC, an induction charging dock that uses magnets to hold controllers in place, and also features a USB port for charging other items.

So, why isn't Phoenix Wright in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom?

Honestly, we're only about 50 percent sure we believe Ryota Niitsuma when he explains why video game lawyer Phoenix Wright didn't get the chance to battle in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, but we thought you should decide for yourself. The producer told NGamer that Phoenix's one attack -- shouting at his opponent -- would have been a fine size in Japanese ("igiari" can be written in four characters), but when translating that shout to the 10 characters in "Objection" ... well, we should let Niitsuma explain it: "When we localize, the balance of the game gets destroyed because the move becomes bigger. There'd be no way of avoiding it! We had to remove [Phoenix] for these reasons. In the future, it is one of our aims to get him in."OK, upon re-reading, we're now 99 percent sure that he's joking. Still, it's funny, right? Read the interview for yourself here, or, better yet, just go buy the magazine.[Via The Escapist]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Peggle: Dual Shot's price drops down to $10

For those of you who don't have at least one version of Peggle already (and for some of you who do, but can't get enough Peggle), Amazon's Deal of the Day is entirely too tempting. The retailer's Deal of the Day is the DS http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/joystiq-review-peggle-dual-shot/">Peggle: Dual Shot for just $10, which is one-fourth the cost of Peggle and Peggle Nights on PC.

If you haven't played Peggle before (here's a free demo), be warned: all the stuff people say about its addictive nature is true. You'll turn it on every time you feel like you have five minutes to kill, and those five minutes will turn into an hour. And then you'll feel bad about wasting so much time, at which point you decide to play a little Peggle to cheer yourself up.

Ubisoft officially reveals 'Just Dance,' for people who don't mind looking like this

Originally discovered in a trademark, Ubisoft has announced Just Dance, a Wii game developed by Ubisoft Paris. While we had some interest in the title due to the possibility of it being Q? Entertainment's rhythm game project, the announcement shows that it ... isn't. Just Dance invites players to learn and mimic "real dance moves set to classic and modern songs across all genres they know and love," as CEO Yves Guillemot put it. Among the 30 licensed tracks: dance classics like "Groove Is In The Heart," "Pump Up the Jam," and "U Can't Touch This." But ... how do you do the MC Hammer dance in this game? Do you attach the Wiimote to your leg? Does it come with special parachute pants with a pocket for the controller?

Spore spinoffs for Wii and DS arrive in October

Ready to make some more bulbous, off-putting creatures? EA has announced the official release dates for the latest Spore universe games, Spore Hero for Wii and Spore Hero Arena for DS: October 6 in North America, and October 9 "internationally" (which means PAL regions).

Spore Hero is an action game in which your gross-looking critter searches for creature parts and attempts to save its home from destruction. Spore Hero Arena is a fighting game, in which you fight! It features four-player local multiplayer and one-on-one online play.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing about this announcement is that October is nowhere near Spring 2010. Look at that, two whole games coming out this year.

VC in Brief: The Revenge of Shinobi (Sega Genesis)

The Revenge of Shinobi (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
We say: Dude, it's Shinobi. We don't need to say anything.

The Virtual Console gets hit with a nasty case of flying shurikens this week in The Revenge of Shinobi. It's classic ninja action on one of gaming's classic consoles. Who wouldn't love that? Okay ... maybe pirates.

Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.

THQ begins a countdown to Smackdown

This might be the weirdest variant of the reviled countdown site yet. We know exactly what the countdown is for -- WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 -- and, since it's an annual sports franchise, we don't really expect surprises. But there it is, counting down three days until we'll see the roster, media, downloads, list of features, and other areas of what promises to be a bog-standard game website.

Of course, the big attraction here is what the new game will look like. However, since that was revealed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, that leaves ... the downloads? Who will appear on the downloadable desktop wallpaper. FIND OUT in three days!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
